Dashe and Donkey&Goat

by Brian K Miller » Mon May 16, 2016 11:08 am

A couple of highlights from my combination "urban cycling adventure" and wine tasting (at the end).

Donkey & Goat Clair-ette. Clairette and Picpoul. I knew there was Picpoul in California, but this was my first experience with a predominately "Clairette" wine. I was quite happy with it...it has some of the roundness and nutty flavors of a "Rhone White," but the Picpoul added some brightness and freshness that made this wine quite pleasant!

Donkey & Goat Pinache. Mendocino Pinot and Grenache. Anderson Valley Pinot "pomegranate" dominates, although the pourer did point out the bright cherry notes from the Grenache. A savory, earthier rendition of these varietals, and this blend represents Jarrod's "experimental" phase. I have to admit I am enjoying the last couple of vintages of D&G. Some of the "challenging" character is being ameliorated by balance, a little more fruit, and mouth feel which creates wines that are more approachable while staying true to IPOB and natural wine philosophy.

Dashe "Ancient Vines" Bedrock Vineyard. This was a very nice savory rendition of old vine Carrignane, Zinfandel, and Mouvedre. The savory herbalness and Mouvedre meatiness are definitely here. Lovely wine. I also enjoyed the elegant, almost ethereal, almost Broc Cellars (13.9% abv) 2013 Todd Brothers Zinfandel.

I did enjoy it!

Dashe also released a Zinfandel from the vineyard. It's much fruitier yet a little tight right now. At the moment, I preferred their Todd Vineyard.

I guess a story like this could be written about any vineyard site or designation.
