WTN: Harrington "Wiley" Pinot

by Patchen Markell » Mon May 16, 2016 10:30 am

Harrington 2011 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir, Wiley Vineyard. 13.5% ABV. Medium-brick color, slightly hazy, powerful rose aroma on opening that persists through the bottle, though becoming slightly muted; also a lot of earth. Floral and earthy in the mouth, taking on deeper black-cherry fruit character with air. Really nicely balanced, terrific with a meal that crossed from spring vegetables to red meat and game; I don't see a lot of potential for further development here, because there's not much sign of the wine holding anything back -- no tightness, no rough edges, just a long, smooth arc of flavor.

Patchen, if you stumble over this other Harrington, be a buyer. Or suggest it to the retailer who brought you the Wiley--my note from about a month ago:

2013 Harrington Secateur California Red Blend
Chelsea's. At every tasting there seems to be one wine that comes out of left field and makes everyone go WHAA-AAT? This was that wine. Dark and dense in color. Initial funk blows off, revealing a beautiful, expressive, crunchy, pomegranate-y blend of complex goodness that made me immediately guess Thackrey. I was wrong about producer but close in spirit: medium to full bodied, it's a weirdly wonderful blend of teroldego, nebbiolo, pinot noir, charbono, trosseau, carignan and a few other things. And it's only $21??? Exceptional value; must buy some. Excellent.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I have a bottle of Secateur! What a funky and interesting wine. I need to drink it!

The Pinot was at a restaurant, but there's a retailer in Chicago who seems to be a Harrington fan; I recently picked up a Trousseau (on which I posted a note), a Teroldego, a Nebbiolo, and a Carignan. Now I'll have to go back and see if they have the Secatuer (or any Pinots)! Thanks, Jenise...
cheers, Patchen
