STN: Cazottes Eau de Vie de Tomates (72 varieties).

by Rahsaan » Fri May 13, 2016 8:58 am

Has anyone else tasted this stuff. From Gaillac, 72 varieties of tomatoes. I was expecting a murky liquor, but then when it arrived at the table crystal clear with the picture of green tomatoes on the bottle, that made a bit more sense.

It was tasty and fun, as alcoholic drinks can be. It had a tiny bit of residual sugar which may have helped. But it didn't necessarily taste like tomatoes. Certainly not in the way that Eau de Vie can be that intense distillation of the fruit. Whether that was a good or a bad thing in this case I cannot say.

But a nice curiosity.

Heitz makes one of those but they only use 57 varieties (rimshot)!
cheers, Patchen

?? French digestif ordered in a Parisian restaurant.

Not sure the Germans make brandies from tomatoes.

Although of course I didn't know that the French did either, prior to this week!

And FWIW, aside from this curiosity, Cazottes is a top notch producer. One of my companions ordered the Pomme Eau de Vie and it was excellent, he was quickly inspired to ask the restaurant where it could be purchased.
