WTN: Alexander Valley Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel 2013

Made from grapes grown by the Sausal family a mile up the road from AVV's estate.

This was a nice surprise. The 2010 was extremely rich and jammy. It was a very nice version of a Zin Fruit Bomb, but a Zin Fruit Bomb nonetheless!

THIS wine was much more appealing to me. Certainly a huge wine (15.3% abv) but it didn't really taste hot. And the thickness of the 2010 was replaced by bright acid (for a high octane zin) and a distinct and appealing black pepper character which really came through over the evening. Quite a nice surprise. I always like the other offerings in AVV's "reserve" tier, (Cyrus remains a favorite Bordeaux blend across vintages and blends!) but this may be my favorite Old Vine Reserve Zin!
