TellTale Signature of BioDynamic Wines??

by TomHill » Fri Apr 29, 2016 11:56 am

I had a Somm tell me several weeks ago, whilst she was hosting a tasting of BioDynamic wines, that BioDynamic wines always have a tell-tale signature that she always recognizes...that they have a vibrancy & aliveness that you don't find in regular/industrial-grade wines.
Since I have a wooden palate, I've never been able to pick up that character in BioDynamic wines.

Anybody out there sharp enough that they can identify a BioDynamic wine by some sort of signature characteristic??

No.

She may have a special sense or receptor that you and I don't have.

Of course, she may also be engaged in wishful thinking. And some sommelier certifications encourage the art and practice of bullshit; can't overlook that.

I like the fact that this is the type of claim you cannot disprove. You have to take her on faith.

Of course, my skeptic meter might say that the case gets weaker if ever she finds a wine that has "vibrancy and aliveness" but is not biodynamic.

And her submitting to an extensive blind tasting (administered by a neutral party) of a random mixture of biodynamic and non-biodynamic wines, with results annotated, might convince you and me, Tom.

A real somm? Where does she work? Tell all.

I think there is a signature (if not really telltale ) to sans soufre wines, and no-sulfur and biodynamic producers have some overlap. But I think no way that biodynamics can be spotted independently, and have not ever heard even my most "natural" oriented friends make a claim like that.

I think the big question is of course does this somm truly exist, or is she the wine director at Tom's Strawman Cafe?

She actually exists and that's what she told me when I queried her.
But no names from me.

Well, Hoke...my Bull$hit antenna went in the full-alert mode. But I wasn't going to
dispute her claim in public. And, like Parker, if she has any smarts, she would not subject herself to the trial you suggest.

I saw you posted the wines elsewhere (simultaneous to my TFIC posting). I would happily try the exact same wines blind, mixed with a few non-biodynamic wines just for an educational experience.

One of the wines was from Nikolaihof, and their wines are certainly distinctive, but I doubt they share any remote psychobabble kinship with the biodynamic wines from Emiliana in Chile.

Maybe she can tell because she only drinks biodynamic wines when there is a full moon.

I think that as an Enlightened One she simply has the ability, gained through deep immersion is Theosophy, to observe the AURA of the biodynamic wines. These auras flow naturally out of the natural wines, unite the beverage of the gods with Mother Earth. One sings in unity with the universe when one drinks a biodynamic wine.

An industrial wine has a sharp and jagged aura that speaks of Capitalist striving and separation.

Obviously, your Somm friend is a more evolved being who naturally prefers the sense of oneness!

Heck. I am going to send this post to Lou Preston*. Maybe I can get a job crafting wine club newsletters!

* Note that I love love love Preston wines. The last newsletter did speak much less wooingly about biodynamics.

Good one Brian, I would of switched “Theosophy” with “Anthroposophy”.
I wonder if Tom’s somm could distinguish a “Biodynamic wine” made from a “non-believer”?

That should be easy. The wine would have soul, but a dark soul. Cuvée Darth Vader if you will.
