Didn't have the strength to face that last Ridge ATP Carignane, so tried for a change of pace:
1. Malvira S.Giglielmo DOC: Langhe Rosso (13.5%; Barbera + Nebbiolo/Teroldego; www.Malvira.com; www.IndigenousSelection.com) Canale 2005: Med.dark color; strong Barbera/fennel/Italian sausage rather earthy/dusty very slight band-aid/brett fairly complex nose; very tart/angular/lean some earthy/dusty tangy/metallic/salado strong Barbera/Italian sausage/fennel/spicy slight brett/band-aid/unclean rather earthy/rustic complex flavor w/ some hard/edgey tanninsmed.long very tart/tangy/salado/metallic rather earthy/dusty/rustic/rough strong Barbera/spicy/Italian sausage slight unclean/bretty some complex finish w/ some hard/bitey/rough tannins; an interesting earthy/rustic/rough Italian Barbera; not sure that age will benefit this wine much. $30.00 (AV)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The Malvira WebSite indicates this wine to be mostly Barbera, plus Nebbiolo and BonardaPiemontese. But Brian, who visited their estate, assures me that it's Teroldego. The Malvira folks don't bother to answer my query on its composition. He fell in love w/ this wine and managed to snag a case of it for his shop. Not usually exported, apparently.
BonardaPiemontese is not related to the other Bonardas in Italy. It's a variety that is being deprecated in the Langhe. In the OltrepoPavese, there is Bonarda Novarese, which is actually another local name for Vespolina. And then there's a ton of Bonarda in SA, where it makes coarse/rustic/rough reds.
I rather liked this wine. Pretty expressive of Barbera in a rustic/crude way.
