The Taste of OldVines???

by TomHill » Mon Apr 18, 2016 12:16 pm

Having tasted plenty of OldVine Zins over the yrs, I think I can (sometimes) find a character that is common to their taste that I describe as "dusty/OV"....a slight dustiness on the palate (mostly) that resembles a bit the taste of the "Rutherford dust". I seldom can identify it blind in a Zin but, knowing it's an OV Zin...yeah....now I can taste it in there. It's not always there in Zins made from OV, but often enough it is if'n the winemaking doesn't obliterate it. I've looked for it in OV Carignane & not found it w/ any degree of success.
Whilst tasting the Arnot-Roberts OV White last night, I was trying to put my finger on common character that you find in these OV field-blends white wines, now that were seeing some of those from Carlisle & Bedrock as well. But there was nothing that jumped out at me as tasting of OV in that A-R.

So...the question...can anybody out there w/ a better palate than mine and who has tasted more of them, guide me to a common character that you can pick up in OV whites?? Or is my palate just so shot that I'm a'not gonna find it??
