SFChron: EstherMobley on SantaCruzMtn Pinots

by TomHill » Fri Apr 15, 2016 9:56 am

Quite a nicely done article by EstherMobley on SantaCruzMtn PinotNoir:
SFChron:SCM Pinot
Covers a lot of the familiar faces in the area. A bit disappointing that it doesn't highlight DavidBruce's great contributions. But those are quibbles.

Being a big JonBonne fan (I know....one of the very few), I was a bit skeptical of the appointment of a WineSphincter writer as the SFChron wine editor. But the more I read Esther's writings...the more impressed I am that she has stepped up to the place and not struck out.

I, for one, was a huge fan of Jon Bonne. His writing style was often just downright breathtaking--probably what some wouldn't like if they want facts rat-a-tat-tat, not literature. Where has Jon gone--moved to New York with his new bride?

Will now read the article by Ethel Mertz--er, I mean Esther Mobley.

Yup, Jenise...Jon now lives in NYC and writes occasional articles for the Drinks magazine.
A lot of the old-time/fuddy-duddies in the Bay area couldn't stand him....mostly because of his advocacy
of wineries they didn't know about. Thanks to Jon, I discovered a number of new wineries that are now
my darlings.

Who is he hanging with in NY? Wine related. I enjoyed Jon's writing . No Jon, no Janet Fletcher, not much to read worthwhile in the Sunday Chron. :(

Thanks to him I discovered what a treasure the Columbia Gorge AVA in my own state is--no one in my corner was talking about it . It's all Walla-Walla alla the time.

Another Bonne fan here!

I tried a quite nice SCM Pinot this weekend from the former winemaker from Mirrasou. La Rochelle is their new project-they are located on one of my favorite cycling roads just outside Kenwood (Adobe Canyon Road, next to Landmark). The SCM was the earthiest of the lineup, which all share a flavor profile I like in Pinots-namely that "pomegranate" fruitiness, rather than the red cherry typical of Carneros, for instance. .
