NIMBY in Napa

by Brian K Miller » Thu Apr 14, 2016 8:10 pm

I'm not a member of Jancis Robinson, so I only read the snippet at Alder's site, but this is interesting.

Planning permits are my profession, so my interest is dual.

Apparently, the permit request by the Halls is getting UGLY. Interesting issue, as one might begin to ask is enough enough in Napa, yet they did everything carefully and legally.

Brian, apparently this is part of a larger movement by locals to maintain some kind of residential dignity versus the traffic and special events: http://www.pressdemocrat.com/business/3638895-181/napa-county-examines-ways-to?artslide=0

I suppose that's still NIMBY.

Anyway, if you like documents, here's the official trove: http://countyofnapa.org/PBES/WaltRanch/

Well..... that is the reason for my mixed emotions.

When is enough enough? The American mindset cannot conceive of "limits" to growth. And how does one decide when enough IS enough?

I have been on 29 mid tourist season. I understand the trepidation. Water is still an issue And, plowing and planting a hillside does have impacts, even if one "mitigates" them.

IIRC, these people are the same ones who bought Clos Pepe in Santa Rita Hills.

Mostly correct about that. From Wes Hagen's farewell note about leaving Clos Pepe: "With a strong desire to see the vineyard thrive, Steve and Cathy have partnered with Hall/Walt Wines of Saint Helena, CA. We are thrilled such a quality-conscious producer will keep the vineyard healthy and keep the wine flowing. Steve and Cathy will remain in their beautiful home at the Clos and Wes and Chanda will be looking for a new home, job and life on the Central Coast. Andrew Turner, our Wine Club Manager, Sommelier and dear friend, has agreed to stay and support the wines and brands until the last bottle finds a good home.

Clos Pepe Vineyards has been leased for 15 years by Hall/Walt and the Hagen/Pepes will no longer make Clos Pepe Estate or Axis Mundi Wines. Hall will continue to sell grapes to our contracted producers, but the amazing 2014 vintage will be our last as wine producers."
