2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/12/2016)It's nearly 15 years post-vintage, and this is the first bottle of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett that I have opened from my own stash since just after release. The first thing to note is that the wine is not close to fully mature. The burnished/smoky tones that signify full development have barely made any appearance. In fact this is still more primary/fruity than anything else. The fruit is lovely, mixing peach, apple skin and pineapple tones that cover a bright, mineral base. Balance is excellent, and there is plenty of depth through the mid-palate and finish, indicating that there is long, effortless aging potential here. I could likely bury my remaining bottles for 15 more years and end up with a perfectly mature and magnificent bottle. Right now it's merely outstanding.
