WTN: 2001 J. J. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett

2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/12/2016)
It's nearly 15 years post-vintage, and this is the first bottle of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett that I have opened from my own stash since just after release. The first thing to note is that the wine is not close to fully mature. The burnished/smoky tones that signify full development have barely made any appearance. In fact this is still more primary/fruity than anything else. The fruit is lovely, mixing peach, apple skin and pineapple tones that cover a bright, mineral base. Balance is excellent, and there is plenty of depth through the mid-palate and finish, indicating that there is long, effortless aging potential here. I could likely bury my remaining bottles for 15 more years and end up with a perfectly mature and magnificent bottle. Right now it's merely outstanding.

You have more patience (and deeper Riesling cellar) than I do. I had a few '01 JJPrums, but drank all the Kabs and Spatlesen. Only have couple of Auslese left.
I don't actually subscribe to idea that Kabs need to be drunk earlier, but as I just drink more Kabs they tend to go first.
In any case 2001 & JJP are a great combo.

IIRC you have a passive (though still very good) cellar, so will probably be further along the curve. My dad's cold (but not as glacial as mine) cellar has shown the 2001s at the Spätlese and Auslese level to be right about perfect for those who enjoy early maturity in the wine.

Can't really grumble about "merely outstanding." Wish I had some bottles on hand.

Not grumbling, but predicting better times ahead.
