WTN: Tradition! Tradition!

by David M. Bueker » Thu Apr 07, 2016 7:10 pm

2012 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Tradition - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (4/5/2016)
I followed this wine through an entire meal of numerous small courses, so it was faced with a wide variety of foods. It performed admirably with everything from a white asparagus dish, to a duck ravioli in dashi broth, even managing a decent pairing with foie gras. The richness of the wine played well with heavier dishes, while its resolutely dry style was a perfect foil for the lighter items. Peachy, spicy flavors, and a wide range of aromatics made for a wine that was also very interesting on its own. Even better was the $45 US equivalent pricing on the Polish restaurant wine list!

Duck ravioli in dashi broth...in Poland! I'm impressed.

I was impressed as well. The restaurant was really good, right up to dessert. When I go back (probably June) I may say that I don't like sweets, so that I get 7 savory courses.

Have you ever had luck with that before? I've tried to decline desserts because a) I have no interest in them and b) hoping for substitutions. They always look at me like I have two heads.

I have not tried, as I have a sweet tooth.

I have not tried that myself but I have seen others swap out dessert for a cheese plate.

So the restaurant had a weird set up. You pick the number of courses but have no say in what you get except for addressing allergies. They have 20 dishes in their nightly list, and they pick from that. I did ask them to try to work with my wine selection (which they largely did), so it was all good. There was no cheese course in the list.

Nice. Everytime I drink Gobelsburg I think to myself that I should drink the wines more often. So enjoyable. But then they get lost in the shuffle.

So you regularly go to Poland for work. Any wine/food recommendations in Warsaw? I'll be there for the first time in July.

Unfortunately we do not have any facilities in Warsaw.

I too am a Gobelsburg fan, but am not familiar with Tradition bottling.

I don't eat desserts. Sometimes with tasting menus I just give my desserts to others, but generally I just say at beginning of evening "I don't eat desserts- when others have dessert could I get just a single piece of cheese or a small portion of fruit?" I think only one time someplace said no, sometimes I get a single portion of cheese, others have usually brought me either a cheese plate or a fruit plate. Doesn't hurt to ask.

I've never had difficulty getting this kind of substitution either. What doesn't happen is getting an extra savory course to replace the sweet as David is conniving to do. :)
