Cunard Queen Mary 2 Wine list: Suggestions please

by Dean E. » Fri Jan 05, 2007 2:48 pm

We are sailing around South America next week on the Queen Mary 2 We will be aboard for 26 days, traveling from Ft Lauderdale, around the horn, and then back home to San Francisco.

I was able to obtain a copy the QM2's wine list and have posted it online...

We drink primarily reds, and would like recommendations for wines for under $45 USD for every night drinking, although thoughts on occasional splurges or special occasion wines would also be welcome...

Please take a look at the wine list and give us any suggestions or thoughts.

Here's the list in (messy) text format

by Robin Garr » Fri Jan 05, 2007 3:40 pm

Dean, welcome to the forum! I'm glad we got that username/password issue sorted out.

I exported the PDF winelist as text so we can look at it right here in the forum. It came out kind of messy - some cryptic codes, and it runs the vintage into the price in a form like "1998100.00", which should read as "1998 $100.00", but I still think it might make it a little easier for folks to be able to skim the list right here:

Champagne is normally
made from three grape
varieties; Pinot Noir for
body, Pinot Meunier for
fruitiness and Chardonnay
for longevity and finesse.
.e blend which
will depend on the individual
Champagne house
style, is normally 2/3 red
grapes (Pinot Noir and
Meunier) and 1/3 white
(Chardonnay)

“Brut” is French for dry. It
is used on labels of a very
dry Champagne.

“Extra dry” on a label may
sound like it’s even drier,
but it’s not. It is actually
slightly less dry

Champagne than “Brut”.

“I drink it when I’m happy
and when I’m sad. Sometimes
I drink it when I’m
alone. When I have company,
I consider it obligatory.
I trifle with it when
I’m not hungry and drink
it when I am, otherwise I
never touch it - unless I’m
thirsty” –

Madam Lilly Bollinger’s
reply to being asked why
she drank Champagne.

From time to time all great things must come to an end. Please find below a
selection of wines that are now de- listed or currently running out of stock. .is
is due to either vintage changes or wines that are becoming more rare to find,
that one day will no longer be available. I can guarantee they are great wines at
quality prices. Please note that due to availability some of these wines may be
out of stock .

As the creator of Penfolds
Grange, Max Schubert is
without doubt the most
important and influential
figure in the modern
Australian wine industry.
Almost single-handedly,
Schubert li.ed Australia’s
table wine industry
out of mediocrity in the
1950’s, a time when more
than 90 percent of wine
consumed in Australia
was sherry, port or other
fortified wine. In the
wine Olympiad in Paris,
his 1971 Grange shocked
the French by winning
the Shiraz class against
top wines from France’s
Rhone Valley - .e home
of Shiraz.

the imports had increased

Although it is generally
agreed that Burgundy is
a complex wine region
to understand, it has one
forgiving feature. By law
all red Burgundies must
be made from Pinot Noir.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape
means the Popes new
castle. And the name
came from the relocation
of the papal court
to French Arignon in the
14th century.

Hi Dean

I'm reading your PDF on the link with no problems and thinking -- wow, what reasonable prices, there's a Veuve Cliquot Champagne for $50 (= 25.90 GBP) when I just paid 42.50 GBP ( 82 USD) in a UK hotel over the holidays.

Maybe the other prices aren't so generous, but I personally would go for the bin-ends e.g. wine 886 Cigare Volante 1997 ($47) and anything that was new to me.

The Spy Valley Pinot Noir at $38 seems good value and it had many fans. -- but I'm a bit concerned whether the wine list is up to date as they are showing a 2001 vintage and that seems a little old for a fast moving wine list, also number 256 Cloudy Bay SB seems too old at 2004 vintage when 2006 is in the shops but $40 in a restaurant seems a bargain, as does Penfolds Grange

I this the current wine list -- prices seem low and vintages are old?

(of course, my thoughts are affected by translating USD into GBP and the USD is very low at the moment)

Peter, by and large I was impressed also ... most of the list looks like pretty standard US restaurant pricing, about double retail. By cruise-ship standards, that's practically giving the stuff away, and that Tignanello at $84 particularly jumped out at me ... that's not far over retail for Tig.

I'd definitely swing for the '96 Dom at $135. That's actually a deal.

The Antinori Orvieto for $20 is reasonable.

Bruno Clair Marsannay for $26 looks okay to me.

They're really gouging on the cheap stuff. $26 for Rosemount Chard? Get outta here!

Prices look pretty good to me generally, and I'm pretty certain there are a couple of wine lectures scheduled on this cruise -- a friend of mine is an entertainer on cruise ships and he likes briefing me on wine events in hopes of enticing me aboard. :-)

If there is one, ask the lecturer what they think would be good, at least if they do a good job with the lecture.

Here's a review of the wine on the QII from last summer -- the article is no longer on line although you may be able to find it on a cache:

Our only complaint was that although the wine selection was extensive, pleasantly global and remarkably reasonable, the service was chronically overwhelmed. Our first night, we ordered a pinot noir that would pair nicely with our appetizer and main course, but it didn't arrive until we'd finished the first course. On subsequent nights, our white wine would be kept in an ice bucket several paces off, but rarely did anyone come around to refill our glasses, a problem I ultimately remedied by retrieving the bottle and setting it on the table.

Neither did the ship have a list of wines by the glass. In any dining venue. We felt sorry for an Australian woman at our table who was traveling alone. When she inquired about a glass of wine, the sommelier said, ``Red wine, we have merlot, pinot noir, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Do you want to hear the white wines?'' Sorry, I need more than that _ country, label, price.

A staffer told me privately that the absence of a by-the-glass wine list was a Cunard decision; the line wants the servers to push bottles of wine instead.

But at least the bottle prices are reasonable. Having just been murdered by the markups in Dublin and London, we were thrilled to find reputable wines from California and Australia in the high $20s and low $30s.

Have a great cruise! [And grab your bottle and keep it at table. :-) ]

Echoing what Peter said: it's probably an old list that hasn't been updated for a while. The vintages are lagging. And if the list is old, then the prices are old.

The trouble with cruise line wine lists is they depend on the chandlering system---replenishing stocks only at certain times and in certain ports. And when they get wine on board, it tends to stay there until it is sold (hence the end-of-bin sale section). So if the steward puts something on the list that doesn't move it just stays there and gets older and older.

That said, and based on the list as is, I'd say that overall it is decent---you will be able to find some good wines in almost all categories, and at fairly good prices. But there's huge gaps as well. I'd say the quality is definitely higher in the European end than the American, and there's more little jewels to be found in the non-American category.

There's not much adventure or discovery going on, that's for sure. But that may be in keeping with the starchy conservative Cunard attitude as much as anything. They probably always default to the generic standards.

I'm not so much concerned with the winelist though, as I am appalled at the report posted with the passenger's comments. The service seemed appalling, and I hope it wasn't indicative of what you're going to experience. You pay a lot of money; you shouldn't receive such poor service. If you do, please complain loud and long to whomever will listen.

According to the file, the list is at the latest from September 2005, so it is indeed old, and presumably all the vintages have cycled by now. A far greater danger is that the weakness of the dollar against the pound has caused the prices to skyrocket.

That said, the pricing is certainly better than you'd find in pretty much any decent restaurant around here, and most of the selections are good quality. The high end is clearly where the deals are. If you've ever wanted to try Cristal Rose, it appears to be selling below retail. I also like the Schoenborn Spaetlese which has a good chance of being open for business. Enjoy yourself, and just stay away from the $20 bottles, when for $30 you can get real wine.

Wow ... I agree that by and large, these wine prices are pretty good. For example, last week I saw the NV Perrier-Jouet Grand Brut on sale locally for $30. It appears on that price list for $35. This is truly an example of reasonable wine pricing, as opposed to price gouging to take advantage of the fact that you have a captive clientele.

I dunno--I thought the prices to be shockingly high. But I've found most retail wine prices lately offensively high, such that I've bought almost nothing in the past 5 years. Let alone restaurant prices. So I suppose that in the context of what appears to me to be an outrageously inflated market, these restaurant/cruise ship prices aren't unreasonable.

Now I know how the Brits felt, when we Yanks entered the Bordeaux market with the 1982 vintage and ruined the previous pricing schema.

I'll pay through the nose for great wine experiences. But I'm sorry, I refuse to pay $30+ per bottle for a beverage that's acceptable (but no better) to drink with a meal.

One ploy to get good service can be to order a bottle of wine in the bar 30 minutes before dinner. The bar staff may need to ring through to the cellar master to get an unusual wine delivered to the bar, but they should be able to do this. Drink a glass each as an aperitif then take the remainder in to dinner with you. This would only work if you match the food to the wine and not vice versa.

As for choosing what to drink, I would try to drink a different wine in the price range each night. Only repeat exceptional bottles.
Cheers,
Neil Courtney

You might want to check their policy on bringing aboard wine. I have done this with Holland who has a fairly liberal policy (corkage of $20 if brought to dinner, free otherwise) I have also found wine service lacking on the cruises and have had to "take" control of the situation. The on board wine events are interesting but mostly geared to newbies, we actually found the cooking classes to be much more entertaining.

Another option for food & wine pairing or when you only desire a glass may be possible. The staff on our last cruise was nice enough to put a cork in unfinished wine for use the next day.

Go for Dom Perignon and Comtes de Champagne. DP 96 at $135 is almost a steal. The latest vintage, less stellar than 96, is on sale at a "discounted" price of EUR 125 at a local supermarket here in Belgium.

I have skimmed the rest of the list and the mark-ups look far less than I would expect in such a luxury cruiser. Avoid wines, such as vintage port, which are likely to have thrown a heavy sediment.
