FredianiVnyd Article

Rather interesting article on the Frediani Vnyd by KelliWhite in Vinous:
FredianiVnyd

It states that all the Frediani grapes now go to ConnCreek and Relic. I know that JCCllrs used to take Frediani grapes...but I guess not anymore.

Has some very neat pics.

Interesting to know. I just put a Frediani Cab Franc away this week, and I have some T-Vine Fred zins. Never knew anything about the vineyard, though.

Something else I learned--that Green Hungarian is a grape. I recall from long, long ago the Wente wine called Green Hungarian and just thought it a proprietary name. Does anyone bottle it as a single variety that you know of?

Well, Jenise....strange that you should ask.
I don't remember a Wente GH, but very much remember Gus Sebastiani's GH. And the variety was made most
famous by FredWeibel in his MendoCnty wnry. But pretty much all Calif's GH has disappeared and don't think anyone
is making one anymore.
But all is not lost. MatRorick/Forlorn-Hope took some cuttings from a solitary GH vine in the LibraryVnyd (TeganPassalaqua
makes a TurleyPS from that mixed-planting vnyd), got a grower in the SuisunVlly to propagate it for him & plant several rows.
He plans to (eventually) make an old-timey GH. It's a huge yielder and the first two crops just didn't ripen enough, given the
crop load, to make a mono-varietal wine, so he blended it away. But someday.......
Now you know the rest of the story, Jenise. Any guess who'll be the first to post a TN on Calif's revived GH here
on WLDG??? Does a bear....

I know what the bear does, as will you!

I'll bet I'm confusing Wente with Weibel. Starts with a W, two syllables.... Back story: when I was 19 I worked for an older gentleman who asked me about liking wine, which I didn't know much about. He highly recommended I try Green Hungarian by W-word. Hock bottle, right? I do recall seeing it in stores a few times thereafter but I'm fairly certain I never tried it.

Which, I'm betting Jenise, was not that long ago!!! :-)

I couldn't find any reference on-line to a Wente GH. So you were probably thinking Weibel.
The Sebastiani came in a hock btl I know. Don't recall for the Weibel.
Weibel is now, mostly, a Central Vlly wnry. The do make a Weibel "GH" (just the initials...implying a GreenHungarian).
But it's a blend of FrenchColombard & Chard.
