WTN: Failla Syrah PhoenixRanch '05...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Mar 29, 2016 12:35 pm

Tried this last weekend:
1. Failla Syrah PhoenixRanch/NapaVlly (14.2%) 2005: Dark color; strong blackberry/boysenberry/black cherry cola/Syrah/licorice rather earthy/spicy light smokey/toasty/oak some complex nose; bit tart slightly tangy/metallic/drying some blackberry/blueberry/Syrah/black cherry cola bit toasty/smokey/oak some earthy/dusty slightly drying flavor w/ some tangy/drying/hard tannins; long lightly tart/tangy/metallic some blackberry/blueberry/Syrah/licorice bit toasty/smokey/oak finish w/ some hard/drying tannins; quite an attractive nose but starting to dry out on the palate; drink up.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Karen found an orphan stash at Kokoman's which included an (outstanding) '06 Riesling Kabinett, 5 btls of this Failla Syrah and one Failla Hirsch PinotNoir. Got a btl each of the first two to try, but passed on the $70 Hirsch (which I expect is still good). This Syrah was still alive, but getting a bit tired & dried out and not going to get any better.
Ehren no longer makes a PhoenixRanch Syrah. It was never one that did much for me. He now makes a Syrah from LeeHudson's ranch, plus his Estate FtRoss-Seaview Syrah, one of Calif's greatest Syrahs, IMHO.

Hey Tom, Phoenix Ranch makes their own Syrah and the 2012 is quite nice. By the way, the Failla Hirsch Pinot Noir, if 2010, is a FABULOUS Pinot, undoubtedly the best non-Burgundian Pinot Noir I have ever tasted. It was very earthy/mushroomy over fruity but I like that style. List price was 70$ but I found it at Whole Foods for 50$ a few years ago and would buy again, maybe even at the list price. One of those wines one sniffs the whole evening.

Yup, Jim...I've had the PhoenixRanch Syrah '12 & liked it quite a lot.
That orphan Hirsch was also '05.
