WTN: Two Novy Reds '04...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Mar 21, 2016 11:58 am

Tried these two over the weekend:
1. Novy Zin PaperaRanch/RRV (14.6%) 2004: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; strong smokey/toasty/Siduri oak some dusty/OV/earthy bit blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/lilacs RRV/peppery bit cedary/pencilly/oldZin complex bit tired nose; soft quite smokey/toasty/Siduri oak light blackberry/boysenberry/RRV Zin/peppery some cedary/pencilly/oldZin flavor w/ light bit bitey/drying tannins; long classic Siduri oak/smokey/toasty some blackberry/Zin/peppery bit cedary/oldZin soft finish w/ light drying tannins; lost a lot of the fruit and starting to dry out but still has a bit of life left & offers some pleasure.

2. Novy Syrah SantaLuciaHighlands (14.8%) 2004: Very dark color w/ little bricking; beautiful peppery/cold-climate very spicy strong blackberry/black cherry/boyenberry/Syrah rather herbal/rosemary some toasty/smokey/Siduri oak/vanilla fairly complex nose; lightly tart strong plummy/boysenberry/blackberry/Syrah some vanilla/Siduri oak/smokey rather herbal/peppery/c-c Syrah rosemary/spicy flavor w/ light smooth/gentle tannins; very long smokey/Siduri oak rather blackberry/boysenberry/c-c peppery/herbal/rosemary finish w/ light smooth tannins; speaks strongly of Siduri oak and SLH Syrah; quite a lovely/mature Syrah probably on the downside.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Novy doesn't get a whole lot of recognition of the Syrahs they make. I think they're quite good, speak strongly of Siduri winemaking, and seem to age quite well over the middle-term.
