WTN: A piece of the Py

by Jenise » Tue Mar 15, 2016 1:00 pm

In honor of Pi day yesterday, we opened a 2012 Foillard Cote du Py Beaujolais with dinner last night. Initially, light raspberry-rhubarb fruit with peppery green notes from the vegetable world like celery and parsley. Gradually, VERY gradually, some fruit emerged but it took close to three hours to open up. Decant recommended.

I am not a fan of 2012 in Beaujolais. The few I have tried have been like your Foillard - green.

David, I can't disagree with you. Over a year ago, blind, I bought a mixed case of Foillards. And though I haven't been hugely regretful as the peppery green thing of the Py has grown on me and it works with some foods, this is so far from the ripe 09 model I fell in love with initially that I probably wouldn't have made the leap had I tasted them first. Strangely, though, just now putting a note on Cellartracker? I'm the oddball, other reports use complimentary words about big fruit and stuff that I don't resemble the wines I own.

I didn't buy very widely or deeply, but it was far from a disastrous vintage (do we even have those anymore) and over the past year or so the ones I bought (Chamonard, Foillard and Descombes VV) had developed into very nice and elegant drinks that I would not call green. If I had more of the Foillard I would have been happy to follow it further. But yes, it was not something I went deep on.

In honor of Pi day I had the 2013 Foillard Cote du Py last night (with mushrooms, feta/olive flatbreads, Asian crispy tofu). Much richer than Jenise's description of the 2012, rich tart cranberry/raspberry fruit, lots of spice, good acids, light supple tannins. Young but tasty.
Yes, 2012 wasn't my favorite Beaujolais vintage (though I liked Foillard's Corcelette a lot).

Dale, apparently I agree with you. My note from last August: Brilliant Beaujolais: bright with an almost other-worldly spicy complexity. Far exceeded expectations based on the last '12 Foillard I opened--either that one was a Py and in this vintage the Corcelette wins, or the add'l six months' rest did wonders.

Based on bottle count, "that one" was indeed a Py.

Imagine being the sole server at a huge restaurant during a March 14 Beaujolais tasting. You'd have to carry Py to 300 places.
cheers, Patchen
