Solution may be in view for Chat Java problems

by Howie Hart » Mon Mar 14, 2016 7:09 am

Java is not compatible with anything any more. I wonder how Google Hangouts would work? It will handle up to 10 people.

That's certainly a thought, Howie. I've never tried Google hangouts, and the 10 limit wouldn't be a problem with the current crowd, but if we come up with a better chat solution, we might start bumping our heads against that ceiling pretty soon.

Let me try something ... I don't know why I've never thought about this before, but why don't I get in touch with the Parachat people - I'm paying them a monthly fee, after all - and ask them if they've developed an alternative to the dying Java. I'll try to do this today, and report back.

Okay, guys! I got a reply, and it looks hopeful. I'm pretty sure we do indeed have the ancient code. I don't have the tech chops to handle the update, though. Do any of you have the skillz to help with this? Otherwise we'll have to hire a tech. But it looks like we can make it happen!

Thank you for contacting ParaChat Support. Since 2012, ParaChat has included a Java, Flash and Mobile/HTML chat user interface with its software. You can see the chat interface selector on the log-in panel in the live demo room on our web site here:
http://parachat.com/demo/chat-now/

If your ParaChat service does not include the selector, then you have embedded old ParaChat room code in your web site. To download the free ParaChat module for phpBB3 that includes the user interface selector, please visit:

Okay, Mary says she's pretty sure she can set this up. Later this week! We'll end up with the same Parachat platform, but it will open directly from the forum and will offers the choice of Java, Flash, Mobile or HTML when you enter the room. :)

Fingers crossed, everyone!

What do I need to do ? Message me if I need to do anything different.

Just wait patiently. :D We're working on it and had hoped to unveil it last night, but couldn't make it. Sunday should be reasonable.

When the jello congeals, it will be simple as can be: The same parachat chat room, but there will be a new "tab" on top of the forum, marked "chat." Click it and you'll come to a login page that offers four ways to enter chat: Java, Flash, Mobile/HTML and ... umm ... something else. Pick the one that works for you, and you'll be in. :)
