WTN: 2013 ESJ Heart of Gold

by David M. Bueker » Sat Mar 12, 2016 5:32 pm

2013 Edmunds St. John Heart of Gold - USA, California, Sierra Foothills, El Dorado County (3/11/2016)
I don't know enough about Grenache Blanc or Vermentino to be able to say if the wine is varietally correct, but it is very satisfying. Pear, apple and melon fruit are accented by a subtle spice that fell somewhere between ginger and cinnamon. Bone dry and medium bodied, the wine is immensely food friendly. Good now and likely for a number of years to come.

Glad to hear this: I got a few of these as part of the case I recently bought, but haven't cracked one yet. I've had another vintage of this, and thought the Vermentino shone through nicely (it's one of the Italian varieties I seek out, especially when I can find examples from Liguria). That spice note you mention sounds characteristic.
cheers, Patchen

all of the last three vintages are under 12% abv, too! Bonus from the drought, it appears.
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...
