Eat fresh fruit and vegetables instead of the traditional fry-up and drink plenty of water.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

I must have drunk half a gallon aleady today. And I ate a grapefruit. Definitely no fry-up--the smell of meat would kill me.

When you feel better - which I hope is soon - tell us more about this affliction, in the interest of prevention. IF you're comfortable talking about it, how did an old pro like you slip over the line?

Wow, almost 6:30 and the room is still spinning a bit. I have no plan for dinner. I don't want to cook, and I don't want to go anywhere. Sucks.

There really isn't much of a story, Robin, we just drank too much wine. We drank a bottle of chardonnay and celebrated the sunset (a ritual we do every March, which has to do with a ridgeline that blocks the sun for half a year), then opened a cabernet to go with dinner, which was very delicious. I can usually absorb that just fine, but for some reason it just hammered me. Probably had too much of an empty stomach during the chardonnay phase.

Well, I hope morning finds you fit and ready! And yeah, I was hoping for something about an awesome party, or a Parkerized delight that you didn't notice had 22.7% alcohol.

And now it's 12 hours later. Any improvement, or is your liver still trying to punish you?

(I remember reading a biography of W.C. Fields years ago. The author recounted being shown into the actor's bedroom sometime around noon, his very first meeting with his subject. The blinds were all closed against the light when he walked in, and the first thing W.C. did was ask the guy if he had any aspirin. If I recall, the passage went "I produced a small tin, opened it, and handed him two aspirin. 'Thank you, thank you' he said. 'Don't slam the lid'.")

Hope you're not in as bad a state

All better now. Oh, and last night while making dinner, Bob showed me something: a third bottle I had no recollection of that we apparently drank most of. I'm still surprised that it hit me that hard, but at least there's a little more justification.

That's hilarious. How cool to be so funny even when you're suffering like that.

At 7:00 I finally told Bob we had to go to the store and buy something frozen or starve. I still wasn't hungry but recognized that I should eat. Plus, I had to get groceries for tonight's dinner (we're having a few couples over). So we went to Trader Joe's and got two frozen pizzas. A slice from each didn't cure my hangover, but it sure cured me of the idea that I could possibly stomach frozen pizza (such awful crust). One claimed to be "Wood Fired". HA! There was absolutely no evidence in appearance or flavor that indicated anyone so much as lit a wooden match in its vicinity. I gave up, ate an apple and some of those huge Peruvian corn nuts Trader Joe's sells (these are seriously good), and went to bed.

Crusts always seem to be the downfall of pre-made pizzas in my experience. Glad you're feeling better! LOL...you gonna repeat the process tonight with your guests? Think you can stomach drinking at all by tonight, for that matter?

It's probably been 20 years since I tried a frozen pizza, I was hoping things would have improved while I was away. No! On the way to town (it's a little over 20 miles to TJ's) we actually decided on ordering a pizza to take home, or maybe go park on the Bay and eat it in the car. This would be our first takeout pizza since we finished the remodeling project six years ago. But when I picked up my cell phone to place an order, my phone was out of juice, and about the same time I realized that in my sorry state I had mistakenly left the house in my reading glasses, so an eye strain headache was just around the corner. Hence the frozen pizzas--had to get home sooner than later. I'd have been FAR better off topping an English muffin with a slice of fresh tomato, a slice of American cheese, and a sprinkle of oregano and chile flakes and baking it in the toaster oven. Probably sounds awful to you, but it's a flavor from childhood that still makes me happy.

As for wine tonight, can't say it sounds GREAT, but I'll survive. :)

Not at all. Besides, I went to college. I've plumbed much, much darker culinary depths than that

Frozen pizza.....you mean you aren't fond of tomato sauce on soggy cardboard? Shocking!

Yes. But sometimes the wretched cheese gives the crust a run for its money!

Wretched cheese can be overcome. Augmentation is a necessity (I drizzled some real white truffle oil on the mushroom pizza, plus added basil; and put a frissee salad with red chile flakes on the other) but there's nothing you can do about a cardboard crust.

No hangover for me today...With marinaded pork tenderloin and grilled veggie kebabs, the 2012 Beringer Clear Lake Zinfandel. Yeah I know..15% alc but not a fruit bomb. A very enjoyable birthday dinner which started off a with a nice Prosecco.
