Domaine Méo-Camuzet 1998 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru "Aux Murgers." 13.0% abv.
This was the only bottle of this we had, bought for $30.00 at auction back in 2002, on the strength of a Méo Échezeaux we'd had in a restaurant that knocked our socks off (and then floated us home on a cloud, as if to protect our poor, sockless feet). Over the years, for reasons I can't now remember, I kept deciding it was too soon to open it. Well, 18 turns out to be a terrific drinking age for this, though it would easily make it to 21. Very fragrant, with only a little bit of funk, fruit still bright, at the meaty and saline end of things rather than the floral, as if it daydreamed of being a Cornas. Long and focused, with some unresolved wood tannins still showing on the finish and becoming more obtrusive with food (a veal chop with hen-of-the-woods mushrooms and roasted treviso). To be honest, the food doesn't do the wine any favors; but it quickly recovers its balance in time for us to enjoy the last glass after the meal. Delicious.
cheers, Patchen
