How long for wine to reach the right temperature?

by Steve Slatcher » Fri Mar 04, 2016 5:14 am

I've written a little utility to calculate how long a bottle of wine takes to cool or warm to your desired serving temperature, and thought you might find it useful:
http://www.winenous.co.uk/wp/how-long-f ... emperature
The method I use is referenced on the web page, but let me know if you'd like more information beyond that.

(It did occur to me that this might look a bit spammy from someone who has not posted much here recently. If it oversteps a line, please forgive me. And I must try to spend more time here!)

Interesting. I will check it out, as I usually save half a bottle in the fridge.

Interesting tool, Steve. I'll try to check it next time I'm cooling (or warming) a bottle

This would be more useful to me with Fahrenheit calculations as I don't do the conversions in my head and would need to add another step to convert from Centigrade to Fahrenheit. I can convert kilometers to miles quite readily as I did a lot of Volksmarching in Germany and watched speed limits in kilometers (other than the Autobahn with no set speed limits) and had one car with an odometer set in kilometers.

JC, I listen to Canadian radio almost exclusively, which means I've had to adapt to hearing weather reports in Celsius. After 13 years I'm actually at the point where I hear "It's 11 degrees at the airport" and react "oh that's nice" without having to do the math. Here's the key: double the Celsius and add 32 (the freezing point for Fahrenheit, obviously). The true math is actually (1.8 x C)+32 but simply doubling Celsius and knowing the truth is a degree or two lower is close enough.

Another approach that I evolved after frequent travel in Celsius-speaking countries is just to remember a few round numbers and then guesstimate between them. So ...

0C = freezing, 32F
7C = chilled wine, 40F
13C = cellar temp, 55F
20C = cool room temp, just under 70F
30C = nice summer day in France, about 85F
40C = blazing hot day in Australia, a little over 100F

Must be the math/science geek part of me, but I just do the 1.8 calculation in my head then add the 32. Umpteen trips to the Canadian Rockies helped as well.

I'll consider doing v2. O with selectable units. Kelvin obiously, as the SI unit, asnd maybe even Farenheit :)

Just realised that, because of the way the equations work, if you enter all your temperatures in Fahrenheit you get the correct answer too.

I have girl-brain. Girl-brain always rounds up to the nearest ten. :)
