WTN: 2001 Bordeaux at Riverpark

by Dale Williams » Wed Mar 02, 2016 10:45 am

Our city Bordeaux group gathered at Riverpark for a look at the 2001 Bordeaux vintage at 15. I had a nice walk down from Grand Central to find most of the group waiting. Oops, and I was bringing the starter , the 2001 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc. Somm said it smelled good, but my first sniff was a bit advanced. Nose is quite nutty, a little caramel, it’s better on the palate but without the zip and vitality the ‘01 Bdx blancs had in youth. I thought this was drinkable, but at least as mature as the ‘83 DDC I’ve had several times recently. My premox rate with 1994 and after Bdx blanc is similar to white Burgundy. B-

On to the reds
St. Emilion flight

Two modern RBers, maybe most divisive flight of night

2001 Ch. Valandraud
Modern, but comparatively restrained, needs some time, very structured. B

2001 Ch. Pavie
Some quite liked this, I found pretty obvious and slutty, though not as OTT as say the 03. B-

My first course was quail with beech mushrooms & barley.

Pessac-Leognan flight

2001 Ch. Pape Clement

Modern, fruit driven, but with some structure. B/B+

2001 Ch. La Mission Haut Brion
Young, powerful, lots held back but still with a lovely core of fruit with a nice spice note. My WOTN. A-

Next I had cocoa spaccatelli with pork ragu and quince. Quite interesting, the pasta just had a little mole-ish touch of cocoa.

St. Julien Flight
,
2001 Ch. Leoville Las Cases
This could turn out to be best of bunch, but now a bit tannic and oak still showing. For now, B/B+

2001 Ch. Leoville Barton
Plodding, pedestrian, woody. B-/C+

2001 Ch. Leoville Poyferre
Way more open than the LLC, modern but not OTT, cassis and mocha. Drinking well already. I’ll probably crack another one for our 15th this fall. B+/A-

My main was rabbit with kohlrabi, carrots, and lentils

St. Estephe/Pauillac Flight

2001 Ch. Cos d'Estournel
(from 2 375s)
Sweet, ripe, forward, good but surprising (maybe the halves?) B

2001 Ch. Montrose
Rich currant fruit, woodspice, plenty of tannin, needs time. B+

2001 Ch. Pichon-Longueville Baron
Young with plenty of fruit, needs time, but already some nice leather and pencil shaving notes. B+/A-

Then we went through 4 375s of Sauternes:

2001 Guiraud
Not a producer I really pay attention to, but my favorite of the bunch. Good acids, orange peel and creme brulee, long finish. A-

2001 Coutet
This seemed a bit less lively and complex than others, though still a nice wine. A slight disappointment only in context of vintage. B/B+

2001 Lafaurie-Peyraguey
Maybe a bit more advanced than others, but nice in a marmalade meets caramel style, with plenty of acids. A-/B+

2001 Rieussec
Rich, biggest, full and long with honied apricots. A-/B+

As we went through the stickies, we did our usual 3/2/1 voting on the reds. The results
2001 Ch. La Mission Haut Brion 18
2001 Ch. Pichon Baron 13
2001 Ch. Pape Clement 7
2001 Ch. Leoville Las Cases 5
2001 Ch. Leoville Poyferre 4
2001 Ch. Montrose 4
2001 Ch. Cos d'Estournel 2
2001 Ch. Pavie 1

Overall I thought the wines showed well, and younger than I expected. I wish we had had a better representation from the RB, would have been nice to taste what a more traditional RB producer had (I have a few, but all singles or twosies, and holding for future anniversaries). Fun night, Riverpark did a very good job, and a nice group of people.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Thanks for the nice notes. I have some 2001 Pichon Baron and was wondering how much decant time you might recommend?

Showed pretty young. I THINK that wine was double-decanted earlier in evening, but can't swear. .
I double-decanted Poyferre around noon.
I think Ben said he decanted LMHB midday and meant to leave in decanter for 30 minutes, but forgot and it was 2 hours before back in bottle.
LLC was double-decanted a couple hours before dinner.

None seemed to be hurt by air. If I was serving at a dinner party I'd probably decant couple hours ahead. If just Betsy and I, decant just before dinner and watch progress all night. Inexact art!

Interesting. I have a bunch of those wines. It's hard to believe it's 15 years.

I will have to pull a Leoville Barton soon. I have a bunch, and your note has me very curious.

Curious what you think. CT notes are good. I don't have, but generally more positive on LB than some others (I do have '00, '02, '03). It surprised me how dull and woody it seemed. No obvious TCA or storage issues.

Overall, pretty good report. Made me take a look at my own cellar with regard to this vintage. I have two wines that are on your list, and will pull a L-B this weekend. But otherwise I've tapped into a bottle here or there but most I haven't touched yet. Am happy to accept comments from anyone with recent experience on these:

Tertre Rotebeouf
du Tertre*
Pontet-Canet**
Monbousquet
Barde Haut*
Le Pin Beausoleil*
Moulin Duhart
Leoville Barton
GPL
Ducru-Beau
Calon Segur
Carraudes de Lafite
Bellisle Mondotte
Latour
Beau Sejour Becot

*These I've tried, and they're drinking very well now
**Needs time
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Jenise,

We have a few of the same wines. Frankly I am surprised our list are not more similar.

Shucks. Somehow I didn't finish typing the list, I see a few that are missing. I also have Haut Brion and La Louviere.

You and I do have similar taste in Bdx, but my list is less about me rounding up my favorite Bordeauxs than what, opportunistically, practically fell into my lap at irresistible prices at the time. Many of these I'd never tasted before, though that has changed in the meantime, I've had other vintages of everything except the Bellisle Mondotte.

The only one that was a recent purchase is the Le Pin Beausoleil. I'd had two and thought they were a great Little Bordeaux That Could. I originally paid just $15 ea for them. Then about six months about a quintet showed up on Winebid at $10 ea. Didn't need them, but I couldn't resist.

Jenise, it's my anniversary year, but you have more than I do! I think our only dupes are du Tertre, Haut Brion, Pontet Canet, and Monbousquet.
Only ones of those I've tried recently were Pontet Canet (young, but not bad with few hour decant) and Monbousquet (sucks, one of my worst purchases ever, young it was merely very modern, now it's all charred wood).

Well if you ever make it out to Seattle or Vancouver, we'll celebrate your anniversary. :)

Understand re the Monbousquet, I've opened one of those. And all I can say is, you'd be surprised how good it takes next to a high octane New World blend.

That's a classy group! With envy I note that I don't own a single bottle of Troplong Mondot. [sad face]

But here's some news! I have a whole case of the 2001 Leoville Barton and hadn't opened a single bottle yet, so in light of this conversation I took one to Bill Spohn's Friday lunch yesterday. Decanted one hour, and here's what you need to know: it's drinkable now, but young and it's not ready yet. Fruit's still fairly primary--obviously, a knock-out for the vintage, though.

I am glad the Barton showed better than Dale's bottle.
