WTN: Two PolyMath Wines...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Feb 14, 2016 10:28 pm

Since I have another PolyMath shipment on the way, I figured it was time to revisit the first two:
1. PolyMathWine Riesling BohanVnyd/FtRoss-Seaview (12.8%) 2014: Light gold color; lovely aromatic R/pineapple/floral some Mosel valve oil/petrol bit earthy/stony/chalky rather Germanic nose; quite tart/stony/flinty/steely/tangy totally dry light floral/R/pineapple/mango some petrol/Mosel valve oil flavor; very long dry/austere quite tart/tangy/flinty/steeky/chalky light pineapple/floral/R/mango finish; this wine is really getting interesting & developing a strong Germanic character; reminds me a lot of a recent Donhoff Nahe R but not quite as rich/lush; this wine should be something exceptional in 10 yrs. $23.00

2. PolyMathWine PetiteSirah Calistoga (13.4%) 2013: Very dark color; light vanilla/smokey/oak strong blackberry/black cherry cola/spicy bit peppery/earthy/chocolaty very perfumed/fragrant nose; lightly tart/lean very strong blackberry/black cherry cola/peppery bit dusty/earthy slightly vanilla/smokey/oak flavor w/ modest smooth tannins; very long/lingering spicy/blackberry/PS/black cherry cola/spicy slight smokey/oak fairly tart finish w/ some smooth tannins; atypical of Calistoga PS but very/very good; needs 4-8 yrs. $16.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. The PolyMathWine effort is the pet project of SavannaWright, asst winemaker at FaillaWnry. In the recent WineSpec article on Failla, she was pictured next to EhrenJordan in the cellars. I've not yet heard any reports on how Savanna is dealing with this recent encounter w/ fame & fortune, but, hopefully, it won't go to her head.
I have, of course, followed PolyMath from the very start, when Kathy (of TomWark and Henry fame) tried me on the PetiteSirah. Last Summer, she also showed me the latest Riesling release. Both wines made a very favorable impression on me and our group bought several cases. We recently went back to order another two cases. This insures that there is more PolyMath wine, per capita, in LosAlamos than any place else in the world, other than, perhaps, Calistoga. Not the first time this has happened for any wnry.
Alas, Savanna made little PolyMath wine in the 2015 vintage. But she promises she'll be back w/ the 2016 vintage. It's a project worth watching.
This is the first I've tasted these two wines since they originally arrived. I am quite impressed w/ how they're evolving. The R is developing a lot of Germanic nuances and is one of the best Calif Rieslings I've had in some time. The PS was originally on the lighter/more elegant side of PS and unlike most Calistoga PS's, which are pretty massive and suitable for mastadon steaks. This PS appears to have put on weight since I last tried it almost a yr ago and developing nicely.
