WTN: 2002 Kabinett

by Jim Grow » Fri Feb 12, 2016 8:18 pm

2002 Nierstiner Pettenthal Strub Riesling Kabinett imported by Terry Theise. Robin's post about Terry and Rieslings prompted me to open this wine tonight with a shrimp stir fry. Bought in a discount bin in Fort Wayne Indiana few years ago for $8.00 it was worth every penny. Medium gold/brassy in color with a nose and palate of peach and apricot, the acidity was excellent. There was a slight minerality /steeliness on the finish and an impression that it was starting to become tired but was certainly a joy to drink. My last bottle from this stash of oldish German Rieslings, I have had to return a few that were shot/oxidized/corked. As I drink more of this while writing, it does not seem tired at all! Probably my favorite Rheinhessen producer or at least the one with the best QPR.

Strub may not be a superstar, but they (father and son now) makes delicious wines at good price points, where the Rheinhessen superstars make amazing wines at equally amazing prices.

There are actually several German winemakers named Keller, but http://www.keller-wein.de/ in the Reinhessen is a blue-chip prestige producer that people like to fetishize (especially the 'top wine' GMax). Hence my joke.

I've enjoyed Strub wines in the past but don't see them often. They are very reasonably priced.
