Maury recommendations?

by Lisa Roskam » Thu Jan 04, 2007 7:30 am

Hello,

I recently tasted enjoyed two Maury (not the Maury Muscat) wines as after dinner "digestifs" and thought they were a delicious way to end a meal. Complex and nutty, not too high in alcohol, a little sweet but not cloying. I have absolutely no other experience with these wines, but I'm excited to continue my explorations. Can anyone recommend a particular producer or wine from this appellation?

Thanks in advance.

Lisa, in France you'll likely have access to producers that most of us never get to see (or taste), but in the US, Mas Amiel is the big name in Maury.

If you like Maury, you should really try Banyuls, by the way ... located nearby, it's a similar wine made in much the same way (<I>vin doux naturel</i>) from red Grenache grapes. Dr. Parcé is one of the big names in Banyuls.

Daniel Lafitte at Domaine des Soulanes makes terrific Maury wines. He makes some pretty nice regular reds, too. His property is near Mas Amiel.

I have tried some of the Mas Amiel Côtes du Roussillon wines, but not their Maury. Mas Amiel is such a big producer I should easily be able to find that.

I have had some nice Banyuls wines also, but they have been a little richer. A friend of mine makes a very nice Banyuls (Coume del Mas Quintessence). I highly recommend it but I don't know if it's available in the U.S.

I was thinking that Rivesaltes could be interesting too.

Thanks for the Mas Amiel tip.

I will see if I can find any of his wines here (Bordeaux). Thanks for the info.
