Is Querbach from the Rheingau on your horizon?

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Tue Feb 09, 2016 8:01 am

Store downtown has bought in some Querbach after one of the owners visited Germany last autumn. New name to me, how about the German fans here?
On the weekend, I tasted the 2002 No.1 Querbach Oestrich Lenchen Riesling which had a crown cap. From the `Gau and went well with brisket carpaccio. Thought drier style than I expected, label did not mention trocken or halbtrocken.

Bob, this estate is unknown to me but that is not much of a criterion because my knowledge of the Rheingau is about 30 years out of date. I see that Gault Millau gives the estate 3 grape bunches (max. 5, I think) which is a decent recommendation http://gaultmillau.de/2015/weinerzeuger ... t-querbach . As far as my German, with Google's help, takes me, the write up shown in the link doesn't give much help on the winery's style.

Thanks Tim for your kind reply. Ed from Devines visited and was very impressed so I have 3 bottles of various whites here.

Never heard of them either, though the vineyard is well known to me through Spreitzer. As for the dryness level, the current practice among most quality estates is that if they do not list anything on the label (pradikat or trocken/feinherb) you will get a drier, if not totally dry, style.

But "the 'Gau?"

That wine was really a dry 2002 with a crown cap? Interesting: can you comment on how it was holding out?
From Tim's G-M link (with my rusty knowledge of German): They harvest the top grapes by hand, and then go through with a machine to quickly bring in the rest. A pioneer of ambient yeast fermentation in the Rheingau.

Bob, if your palate is aligned with Ed's, that should be good enough recommendation.

From the Archives.

I was fortunate to have a further Querbach tasting last night downtown. The 2001 Library Release Edition Riesling is an exceptional wine as I hinted a few yrs back.It is still on the shelf for $30 Cdn! From the 2001 vintage.
Folks were intrigued by the beer cap ! I found the color still quite light with some green apparent. Dry-ish, excellent acidity, steely, lime, mineral. Others noted peach and pineapple but not in a ripe style. Highly recommend this wine.
