G.D. Vajra 2011 Langhe Rosso, a blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto (with, Vajra's website says, small quantities of Albarossa, Freisa, and Pinot Noir). 13.5%, $17.00 (at a shop that tends to have steep retail pricing).
I was primed to notice this label while browsing a local shop because we'd recently enjoyed a bottle of Vajra's "Kye" Freisa. (And also, frankly, because the Art Nouveau typeface used on Vajra's label looks a little like the one used on old-school Alfredo Binda embossed leather bicycle pedal straps. Hey, some people pick up bottles because of the cute critters on the label, right?)
This was really nice. Lean but not austere, with a mix of Dolcetto-like dark fruit and some higher notes, including the barest suggestion of flowers from the Nebbiolo. Soft entry but picks up a little structure in the mouth. No perceptible wood. Lively and savory, just the kind of weeknight wine I look for at this price point, or, frankly, a little higher. I'd gladly keep a few bottles of this around the house; in fact, I think I will!
