WTN: Two Palmina Whites...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Feb 03, 2016 12:26 pm

Picked these up in Lompoc last week:
1. Palmina Arneis "Little Rascal" HoneaVnyd/SantaYnezVlly (12.5%; www.PalminaWines.com) 2013: Light gold color; some pineapple/dried pineapples/floral/apple blossoms/new mown hay light stony/chalky rather perfumed nose; quite tart/steely/tangy pineapple/dried mangos/apple blossom/floral bracing/stony/chalky flavor; quite long tart/tangy/steely ripe/dried mango/pineapple/apple blossom/floral some stony/chalky finish; quite attractive wine w/ lots of Arneis fruit and that classic stony Arneis character; this is how they would make Arneis in the Piemonte if they could. $28.00
_______________
2. Palmina Cortese CascinaCortese/SantaYnezVlly (11.5%) 2014: Light gold color; quite stony/mineral/chalky slight perfumed talc little fruit classic Cortese nose; quite tart/lean/austere steely/chalky/stony/mineral little fruit flavor; med.long lean/tangy/austere/chalky/stony finish; this is how they make Cortese in the Piemonte. $26.00

1. Really liked the Arneis w/ lots of perfumey character. The Cortese??? Meh!!! Not a very big fan of Cortese where ever it's from.

Tom: have you tasted Seghesio's Arneis? If so, how wd you compare to the Palmina? I have enjoyed several vintages of Seghesio's Arneis..also their zins..
No experience as yet re Palmina wines.

thanks, Jon

Yup....have tasted it several times in the past, Jon. Not in the last yr, though.
Thought the Seghesio was a bit simpler...not the stony character of the Palmina.
The Palmina wines are a bit on the expensive side...but well-made.

Complete agreement on the Arneis. One of the more exciting Ca whites I've had lately.

Tom, had the 2014 Palmina Pinot Grigio last week at a restaurant. I'm actually not in the habit of ordering PG's, but if anyone could make that grape interesting in a whole new way, it would be Palmina so I bit. Wasn't wrong! It was a nicely straw-gold wine vs. the almost water hue of most, and quietly powerful on the palate without reeking of ripeness or alcohol. It was in fact quite elegant with subtly integrated oak. Very admirable and delicious. I'd be a buyer if stores near me carried it--but they don't.

You do! This PG had the body of a chardonnay without the overt flash or the apples.
