Vinography: "Martha Stewart's Wine Cellar is a Disaster"

Fascinating stuff, not just for wine geeks. Who's surprised?

She may be the queen of organization, but Martha Stewart really needs some help when it comes to the wine cellar for her Winter House.

Stewart made a blog post today with photos of her wine cellar reorganization project in progress that will have any wine professional cringing.

What floors me is that Martha manages to deliver this in something like her usual "here are some really helpful tips from someone who knows" tone. It's literally presented in step-by-step how to format with pictures! But she comes across as an almost-clueless amateur who just happens to have a cellar full of some really nice stuff. Yikes.

I don't know much about Martha Stewart, other than that she went to gaol, but she obviously has good taste in wine, i.e. like mine  .

Yes her cellar is a mess but so is mine. I now keep my stock in three Liebherr wine fridges and have the access problem in spades; shelves with three layers of bottles two deep. If I want a bottle other than from the front of the top row, that means disturbing other bottles with the risk of breakage. I need CT to tell me in which fridge and on what shelve each wine is stored but that doesn't help for where the bottle is on each shelf, some of which contain up to 48 bottles.

One day I will write a rant about these fridges.

Instead of stacking bottles, why didn't she put in extra levels of shelves? It looks like there's room for at least one additional shelf between each of the ones she has.

You made me laugh! You're hopeless. I'm thinking Rachel probably doesn't have a wine collection. Kool-Aid, maybe.

And what are her shelves made of? The white stuff looks like the corrugated green plastic my uncle used to have atop the cinder block fence around his pool in California--very 50's, let everyone know you had a pool. :)

Me too, but the difference is she has what looks like unlimited space and the money to do it properly.

In order to fill my Eurocave effectively bottles are stacked head to head then on top of each other. I've tried to lay early drinkers at top but getting a special bottle means disturbing all the rest. It's a real inconvenience but it's the only place I can age wines in a temperature and humidity controlled environment.
