The 2012 is here in town and am wondering about the track record here? Thanks in anticipation of some good news.

2012 was an excellent vintage for the Finger Lakes, but I haven't tried it. That being said, I think you'd find Cab Franc from the better wineries of the Niagara Escarpment, Ontario to be better.

Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Agreeing with Howie that 2012 was a good year for reds in the FL. While I have not had the Fox Run CF lately, it gets a very good review here: http://www.fingerlakeswine.info/red-win ... -2012.html . (A nice site for tasting notes from that region, BTW).

We went to a tasting of FL wines last winter(probably time for another one soon) put on by Cornell Univ.Alums...tasted a number of Cab Francs tho I don't think Fox Run was one of them..My impression was that the FL Cab Francs were quite nice and worth looking into ..The best Cab francs from FL that I have tasted come from Damiani and they have been consistently good for a number of years.

All very interesting, might be useful to drink alongside a Loire CF. Different "as chalk and cheese" eh.

That looks like an excellent site Joe, many thanks. BTW, have you tried the Lemberger?

We've had the Lemberger as well, and it is also excellent.

I haven't been following Fox Run closely for the last few years for a couple reasons. Last time I stopped in, a few years ago, the wines didn't strike me as that interesting and the tasting room was a zoo. The wines seemed competent but commercial and the pricing was weird. Plus there was a practical aspect: they are near the far north western corner of Seneca Lake. If I come from the south, I may have stopped at Wiemer, Shaw, Bellangelo, or Anthony Road on the way north. And Ravines and Red Tail Ridge (good Lemberger, BTW) are in the vicinity. So the logistics haven't favored a visit. But Peter Bell is a good winemaker and some recent tasting notes suggest I might want to stop in on my next sweep through that area.

IIRC, Fox Run's Lemberger struck me as over-oaked, and that seems to be a problem with several in the region. Recently, I think some of the winemakers have begun to dial back the oak.

In the meantime been doing some reading and Ravines seem to be one CF to look out for.

Anyhows here is my TN on the Fox Run.

I am well aware of CFs attractions as I am a collector of Loire reds. This is not the same style...terroir, vine age etc. Quite elegant with soft tannins, medium-bodied, lengthy finish. Blueberry on the nose, some green peppers, cherry and a hint of blackcurrant. Same fruits on the palate with spicy tones but they are restrained. No fruit bomb here forumites! "Finish is quite dry" from across the table and a good match with pan-fried chicken breast, beans and potatoes.
Lets see how it develops overnight.
