WTN: EdmundsStJohn LesCotesSauvages '94....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jan 18, 2016 2:02 pm

Tried this last night after the Joncier fail:
1. EdmundsStJohn LesCotesSauvages Calif RTW (42% Mourv/17% Cinsault/16% Syrah/8% Carignane; 13.7%) Emeryville 1994: Med.color w/ slight bricking; quite Rhonish/roasted/smokey/coffee light earthy/dusty some plummy/spicy/Mourv light mushroomy quite complex nose; lightly tart/tangy/metallic rather Rhonish/smokey/espresso/smoked meats light toasty/oak bit plummy/Mourv/blackberry/Syrah complex flavor w/ light drying tannins; very long/lingering bit earthy/dusty some Rhonish/smoked meats/coffee/roasted light plummy/Mourv bit tart/tangy rather complex finish w/ light bit astringent tannins; quite an interesting/complex old CdR but still very much alive & a pleasure to drink; this is how they'd make CdR at Joncier if they could. $16.00

1. The last btl of this I tried was pretty badly faded. This one was in excellent shape, though on the downside. I've followed SteveEdmunds from the very start and I'm beginning to think he knows something about making good wine. But the jury is still out & I'll have to follow him for another 20 yrs to be sure.

Nice to read that the '94 is doing ok, Tom. It was a challenging year, in that we had some Grenache that stuck in fermentation, and we ended up dumping it. Some of the Mourvedre that year was from Redwood Valley, and not such great shakes. If I'd known then what I know now, I might've sold to Kendall Jackson, and moved to Wichita. I might be sheriff there, by now, or dog-catcher!
If you're gonna follow me for another 20 years, you're gonna need some pretty rugged footwear... :)

But if you had sold we would not have had the 2005 Wylie-Fenaughty Syrah which was a joy the other night.

Well, that would depend on whether it was Wolfe or Bree to whom you were referring. :D

Alan Wolfe of course. If Bree gets wind of this I'm sure he'll figure I'm into a state of full blown dementia. :(
