Shared this w/ John this afternoon:
1. G.D.Vajara Kye Freisa Dd'OC: Langhe (14.5%; www.GiulianaImports.com; L35-12) Barolo 2009: Very dark color; rather floral/lilacs/licorice/pungent bit tarry/earthy light smokey bit black cherry cola/DrPepper quite strong nose; fairly tart some floral/licorice/black cherry cola/DrPepper bit earthy/dusty/tarry flavor w/ ample hard tannins; very long strong floral/licorice/tarry/pungent earthy/dusty/smokey finish w/ ample hard/rough tannins; not like Barolo Nebb and more like CollineNovarese Vespolina/Nebb blend; quite hard/tannic & needs age. $44.50 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Freisa is a cross between Nebbiolo and an unknown other parent. This one resembles a Nebbiolo from the CollineNovarese more than anything. Oftentimes the are made as a partial fermentato, a bit of fizz and a bit off-dry. I really like those versions. Freisa is a grape they should be planting all up & down the coast of Calif. BonnyDoon had some in Soledad at one time, but pulled it. Dumb move.

Just had the 2011 of this wine last night at a regional Piemontese restaurant in Chicago. Not surprised to learn it's a cross of Nebbiolo. The 2011 didn't have as much floral character as you describe, swung more to the cocoa and cola direction, but we were impressed by its complexity and by how well it carried its weight; if anything it seemed to pick up structure with air. Great with food, didn't seem hot or blowsy at all. Thanks for the note and the info!
cheers, Patchen
