WTN: Merryvale "Antigua" Muscat Desert Wine

by Brian K Miller » Thu Jan 14, 2016 1:43 pm

A friend and wine bar manager and I shared a portion of the fortified Antigua Muscat Desert Wine. This is a multi-vintage, aged sherry-process wine made under flor in oak barrels. A smidgeon of the wine in this bottling dates back to 1970, the label claims!

Anyway, this is all about caramel, nutty goodness! Certainly "sweet" but lacks the heavy cloying character of some PX and Cream sherries I have tried. There is a nice kick of acid-freshness even. Layers of burnt sugar, earth, caramel, nuts. A hint of alcohol burn, but balanced enough that this is not a problem at all.

We all loved this wine!

Not sure, Brian, that flor yeast is involved. I sort of doubt it at this sweetness level.
The wine certainly shows some oxidation and is a bit aldehydic (least the last one I tried), but I
love it as well.
