WTN: Two '95 Zins...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Jan 12, 2016 1:06 pm

Two out of four last night that were salvagable:
1. ZebraZin Zinfandel NapaVlly (14.4%) HarrisonWnry/StHelena 1995: Dark color w/ light bricking; fairly strong blackberry/raspberry/Zin/bit spicy light toasty/Fr.oak rather youthful quite attractive nose; rather soft somewhat raspberry/Zin/spicy/blackberry slight earthy/smokey/pungent light toasty/Fr.oak flavor w/ light smooth/gentle tannins; quite long rather spicy/raspberry/Zin/blackberry/juicy light earthy/pungent light toasty/Fr.oak finish w/ light gentle tannins; still has loads of fruit and not drying much at all; in very good condition for 20 yrs old.
_____________
2. A.Rafanelli Zin DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty (U; 14.0%) Healdsburg 1995: Dark color w/ slight bricking; strong blackberry/boysenberry/Zin/spicy rather dusty/OV rather bretty/horsecollar/leathery light toasty/oak some complex nose; soft/fat slight metallic/tangy fairly strong spicy/blackberry/Zin/raspberry/earthy bit rough/rustic rather bretty/horsecollar some dusty/OV toasty/oak flavor w/ light rough tannins; med.long rather bretty/horsecollar/unclean some blackberry/spicy/Zin rather rustic/rough/earthy some toasty/oak finish w/ light rough/hard tannins; still has plenty of Zin fruit but too unclean/bretty for my taste.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. ZebraZin: This would be the original Harrison Wnry&Vnyds up in the Eastern hills above LakeHennessey. Don't believe they're still in business. There is a WM Harrison down off the SilveradoTrail that is a different one.
_____________
2. Rafanelli: Never had the opportunity to meet DaveRafanelli. The stories of abusive treatment in the tasting room by PattyRafanelli are legendary...but I've not heard any new ones in years. The one time I stopped at the tasting room, the daughter was running it. She made it clear to me that she was bored out of her gourd and would rather be anyplace than dealing w/ a snobby customer.

Love Rafanelli zins tho we did not get into them until the 2006 vintage..On our visit, we were greeted by Dave and a herd of very well behaved dogs..Dave cd not have been nicer, gave us tour of the facility and spent a lot of time with us..He did not know us from Adam. I guess we caught him at a good time..At the suggestion of a local wine store owner, we had called ahead to ask if we cd stop by He asked me how soon could I get there and when I said 15 minutes, he graciously said yes and invited us to come by and taste/buy some of his wines..Did not meet any other members of the family.
