WTN: 2014 Wittmann Morstein GG

by Rahsaan » Sat Jan 09, 2016 6:53 pm

2014 Wittmann Westhofen Morstein Riesling GG

Serious and intense stuff. My first time with a dry Wittmann, and I've always been somewhat skeptical of the Rheinhessen but this was pretty elegant as these things go.

Sure it was deep and textured from the beginning, and it only gained power and weight with air. But it was also fine, precise, refined and piercingly mineral throughout.

Lovely at dinner with baked halibut, mushroom ravioli and arugula salad. Lovely after dinner with contemplation.

Lovely.

The Wittmann dry wines are excellent, but the pricing is getting quite steep. He wants to keep up with Keller.

I'm based in Berlin at the moment and paid around 50 euros (55 USD) for the Wittmann Morstein, and the same price for the 2014 Keller Hubacker as it happens. I haven't opened the Keller yet, but I thought that was a fair price for the quality of the Wittmann.

I have never really sought out either producer in the US, but Wine Searcher tells me that some stores appear to have the Morstein for around 55/60 USD, but I have no idea how legitimate/available those listings are. Interestingly, in the Wine Searcher universe, Keller Hubacker in the US can be found around 60 USD but then goes up much higher in most stores.

The price is okay - I paid 49 - and the wine is very good indeed. Do not try the La Borne, though, hardly better and with an outrageous price : 150 plus!

Interesting. Thanks for the thoughts. The La Borne was not exactly first on my list of what to buy next, but always good to get an opinion. Out of curiosity, does La Borne show better in other vintages? With age?

Is La Borne new? Never heard of it before.

I bought the 09 which was 63 Euros but cannot say it is way better than the standard wine, and considering the outrageous price they charge now, forget it. Seems he wants to compete with G-Max simply increasing the price.

Ah yes, price wars. Always great for the consumer. With any normal commodity the price goes down when this happens. Not with wine. Hey, if your wine is $100, mine has to be $125!
