WTN: LosLuceros LeonMillot '03...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sat Jan 02, 2016 7:33 pm

Tried this the other night w/ tamales:
1. LosLucerosWnry LeonMillot LasParras de AbiquiuVnyd/RioAribaCnty/NM (13%) Bruce&Sue Noel/Alcade 2003: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; fairly strong grapey/plummy/boysenberry bit licorice some earthy/Kansas root cellar bit Mourv-like some complex light oak nose; soft/fat/bit underacid slight tangy/metallic rather strong plummy/grapey/boysenberry some earthy/dusty/loamy/root cellar flavor w/ light round/smooth tannins; med.long soft/lush/slight underacid strong plummy/licorice/boysenberry bit tangy/metallic rather earthy/loamy finish w/ light smooth tannins; quite an interesting red that resembles AZ or CO Mourv more than anything; no hybridy/plastic/new vinly trash bucket character at all; quite interesting & well-made; best LeonMillot I've ever had.

1. LosLuceros was a rather short lived wnry just North of Espanola at the LosLuceros property. Bruce & Sue Noel signed up for my very first wine class in LosAlamos in 1973 and we've shared many a btl over the yrs. Bruce planted a vnyd and built his wnry on the historic LosLuceros Ranch, the hacienda which dates back to the 1800's. With his background in French wines, Bruce was able to craft some very interesting/atypical wines from hybrid grapes (mostly) over the yrs. This LeonMillot was one of the better I've tried. He had a particularly good touch w/ BacoNoir, a grape that typically makes rather coarse/rustic wines.

Don't see a lot of Leon Millot tasting notes and can't recall seeing one on a wine list anywheres..Somewhat obscure grape..First time I saw a post re Leon Millot, several years ago, perhaps on this board, perhaps not, I remember having to asking what Leon Millot was..To this day, I have never tasted Leon Millot and I doubt, this post included, that I have seen a dozen posts re this grape

I've tried a few Leon Millots over the years. In fact, I have a few vines growing in my yard, but I've never been able to get a harvest due to the fact that birds love them. A friend of mine owns a winery nearby and planted some a few years ago. I'll have to check and see if he's bottled any yet.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Hi Jon,

If you want to try a Leon Millot stop by Keuka Lake Vineyards, just north of Hammondsport on the west side of Keuka. They make some really good Riesling and Vignoles as their main products, and usually have a Leon Millot (although I'm still not a fan of red hybrids).

Thanks for the headsup, Joe..Since I tend to like FL Rieslings and Vignoles, could be a productive trip, even if I find that I don't like Leon Millot..Come to think of it, the only Vignoles I have tried, have all come from the FL's..
