WTN: What wine goes with Indian food? This wine!

2014 Arnot-Roberts Trousseau North Coast - USA, California, North Coast (12/30/2015)
I now have an answer to the question of "what red wine goes with Indian food." It may be light in body, but it has boatloads of red fruit flavors, and the inherent "sweetness" of the fruit tames the heat of the food (a spicy masoor dal in this case). What a fantastic pairing!

Interesting. I normally drink beer, or occasionally, riesling or gruner veltliner, with Indian food, but recently had a bottle of Couly-Dutheil 2013 Chinon les Gravieres at a phenomenal Indian restaurant in D.C. While the wine was decent -- not great and certainly no Baudry -- it worked brilliantly with three of the five dishes we had and was good enough with the other two. I've long found Loire CFs a good match for not overly hot Chinese food, but this was a bit of a revelation to me. While I've never had a California trousseau, I imagine some similar dynamics might be at work.

I usually go with a dry Alsatian Gewurztraminer or Champagne when dining on Indian food, especially items heavy on curry.

Gewürztraminer is one of my go to wines, but I wanted red and so ended up with this result.

I never, ever drink Champagne with spicy Indian food. It makes the wine taste metallic.

Like Bruce, I've generally found (lighter styled) Loire CFs to be good with Indian food that complex but not especially hot (biryani, etc). So this makes sense. I've only tried the 2011 AR Trousseau, but liked it a lot. Looks like the '14 is at CSW and Grapes, will add to whichever one I place an order with next/
