What is max. # bottles of one wine you own?

by Jim Grow » Sun Dec 20, 2015 3:01 pm

I just today bought 2 more cases of the Hensley Hillside Napa Cabernet 2009, after buying a 1/2 case earlier. I now have 30 bottles minus the one I drank a few days ago, it is that good. Maybe I can hide a case at my storage site 30 mi. away and put some real age on some of these. This is a new record for me. I once bought 2 cases of 1983 Lake Sonoma Gewurztraminer in the mid-80's for $1.99/bottle. Very nice wine for a Cal. Gew. What are your max. bottle numbers for a single bottling of wine?

We have a ninety eight hole custom make rack that we have had for decades. Also have a couple of on case plastic racks that we can use in an emergency. Of course we could always store as many cases as we need upside down in the case they came in in the cellar.

Carl,

Jim is asking a different question.

Jim,

Over time I have bought 2 cases each of a few wines. The most recent is a 2012 Merkelbach Riesling Spatlese.

The most we've ever bought of a single bottlilng is a (12-bottle) case ... a wacky item, too, Puzelat Pineau d'Aunis. Mary loves it, and it's an excellent QPR wine of the AFWE, so a case to drink up over a year or two seems reasonable.

Checked my current inventory of that Merkelbach: 16 bottles.

I've never bought more than a case at a time. However I have made a few batches of over 30 gallons, which when bottled exceeded 150 bottles.

Four cases of the 2013 Ridge LS. I have not counted the 1994 Taylor, but I suppose I have more than that. I bought eight cases in 1997.

A LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago, at Trader Joe's when it was a small ten store chain confined to the Los Angeles area, I bought about five cases of Jekyll Pinot Noir for around $1.99 a bottle. I had disliked pinot noir previously, fell in love with the Jekyll after buying a bottle, then bought a case, still liked it and then backed it up with another cuz it looked like we'd run out before too long and meanwhile got even more smitten so when I discovered they hadn't run out yet I bought three more cases to tide us over. And that was back when I didn't know anything. I didn't even consider what I had to be part of a cellar--it was just five cases of wine in the garage.

Now I rarely buy in quantity. I buy the occasional case, but it's rare.

I buy a case to 2 cases of Sea Smoke Pinot Noir every year from their list. I suspect I have about 4 cases of various years in stock.

I seem to have 13 bottles of 2000 Cantemerle.
I've got a few solid cases of wines (W. Schaefer Kab, Leitz Roseneck Spat, Carillon Puligny) just because I had them sent directly to offsite and haven't pulled any (usually if I buy a case of something- fairly rare- I try at least one bottle pretty soon).
If not counting vintage, about 3 cases of Lagrange (St-J).,

I've 2 cases (24 bottles) ChTour St Bonnet 2012 Medoc, one case of 2010 and odds of vintages back to 2005.

I've not been buying so much recently, trying to drink up what I've got.

Sometimes Wine Soc has an offer if you buy 2 cases so I get 2 of their Montepulciano as we open a bottle every week, and when we drive to Champagne I get 3 or 4 cases of Champagne from Francis Boulard and case of halves.

Only worth buying multiples of wine you know you'll want to drink.

For every one bottle you open you are choosing not to open many thousands of alternatives.
