Simi Reserve Cabernet: Which year to buy?

by kim.schoeneck » Tue Dec 15, 2015 6:11 pm

Hello, I'm trying to get my dad a bottle of Simi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon for Xmas and wondering which year to get. I admittedly don't know much about wine. I just remember him saying he loves this wine and a long time ago he bought a ton of old bottles and how great it was, but he can't find it anywhere now.

Anyhow, I see a ton of bottles available for purchase online, all different years. I don't know which year to buy. Is it the older the better? Can wine age for TOO long? I see all the following years available for affordable prices, does anyone have any recommendations? 1987, 2004, and a bunch of mid-late 2000's.

Any advice much appreciated!

The 2006 vintage has received mostly good reviews on CellarTracker and is available from Viscount Wines & Liquor in Wappinger Falls, NY for approx. $50 before tax. I don't know if you are closer to the East Coast or West Coast as far as shipping charges. Ten years is usually a good starting point for California Cabernet Sauvigon. Some can age 20 years or more but Simi doesn't seem to be one to age for that long.
