WTN: Not such a "boaring" wine

2007 Insoglio del Cinghiale Campo di Sasso, Bibbona, Toscana I.G.T. Italy.
Bottled by Biserno. 14.5% abv. (Has a boar on the label.) Dense and opaque purple in the glass. Dark fruit (dark cherries and plum) on the nose with a whiff of earth as well. Tart dark fruit on the palate. Mild spices. A blend of Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Paired pretty well with a broiled lamb chop and baked potato.

The blend is not all that unusual. Before Phylloxera the top Bordeaux estates used to import syrah from the northern Rhone to blend with their local cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot and carmenere. They proudly boasted of such "Hermitage" blends on their labels and charged a premium for them. The AOC laws put paid to this practice.
