WTN: It Skous Greek

Couldn't help going for a David B. style title. This one is really good, seek it out!

Domaine Skouras, Saint George, Aghiorghitiko, Nemea 2011
My first experience with Agiorgitiko. Dark ruby. Lovely nose with nice depth: herbs and generous violet notes on top of sweet, pure cherry notes, with undertones of smokey/tarry rock/earth (clearly volcanic terror), a hint of chocolate, a whiff of olives, and glycerin. Similar notes on the palate, with a hint of acai, perhaps a touch of tobacco leaf toward the finish, generous spice, and some sharp tannin. Medium-full bodied and firm, with generous, delightfully juicy acidity, and a very nice, succulent texture. I’m quite taken with it, although it does leave one wishing for a bit more persistence and length. Blind, I would probably have guessed Southern Italy, but the fruit, acid, and herbal qualities are distinctly different, and consistent with the other Greek reds I’ve had. Whatever the case, I like this very much. Does show some tertiary glycerin notes, but with relatively youthful acid and tannin structure. I wouldn’t be surprised if this continues to develop nicely for another 3 - 5 years. 2.5 Stars [12/5/15]

Skouras also makes a nice Moschofilero (white)

Compelling note, Ryan. I have enjoyed at least a couple agiorgiotiko wines (I guess the "h" after the "g" is optional) at Greek restaurants in NYC or Charlotte or Raleigh.
