WTN: Take a Nota

by Jenise » Mon Nov 16, 2015 1:53 pm

Years ago, I bought three bottles of what was then supposedly BC's best red wine. It was certainly the hardest to get--highly allocated, sold out fast. Here's my overall poor experience with those three bottles:

2004 Black Hills 'Nota Bene'

11/16/2015: Not decanted. Initially, nose was odd but it tasted okay, good even, though not like a 46% cabernet Bordeaux style blend. Overtly acidic, too. In a short amount of time, though, the palate caught up with the nose and it reminded me of this horrible Eastern European plum brandy called slibovitz that my father used to love with a little rat poison thrown in. We dumped it. When to drink? Never.

7/4/2015: A good bottle proving that the dried up bottle one year ago was a fluke. Tangy, savory, with emphasis on the cab franc component. Good finish--a pleasure.

7/2/2014: Pale garnet color, fully mature, tires quickly in the glass. My first of three bottles, and from what I see in other people's notes it looks like I missed the boat here.

That's some wild variation.

Of course you drank it 18,000 years too soon.

OOPS! Not 20014, 2004. I'll fix it!

I never listened to all the hype for the Note Bene - and there was much hype in BC! - but I have to say I am extremely suspicious of any BC (or ON) wine, especially red wine. I have tried a few bottles bought by friends over the last 10 years or so, and there were a few good bottles, but no 'great' bottles. It's rather an anonymous wine that could be from almost anywhere, at least when I tasted them. I haven't had a bottle for a few years now, though. The bottle variation you experienced is indeed alarming...

I get what you mean. I have had some very good BC wines, but it's truly the whites that stand out. Well, the whites and, recently, anything by La Stella or Vieux Pin.

I can't get over the bottle variation. I suspect they acidified, though I have no clue why a vintage like 04 needed that. I had one 04 once years back at Bill Spohn's that he opened to compare to an 04 Feather (Long Shadows, and this the full cab made by Napa's Randy Dunn) that I'd provided. I have a few more vintages. I'll probably hate every one just because of the mess these 04's turn out to be; I'm not the forgiving type. :|

C'est dommage!

I've seen some variation as well - IMHO a decade is the turning point for many/most BC reds and they should be drunk up or at least tasted before that point.

I'll make a not to invite you to my next Nota Bene vertical.....

But, what kind of turning point? I'd call this a hairpin turning point!
