Davis Family Vineyards

by Tom NJ » Mon Nov 16, 2015 8:37 am

I was recently gifted two bottles of Davis Family Vineyards' wines by a very nice couple who follow my blog, and with whom I've become friendly. The wife works at the vineyard as an administrator, and when she read that my wife loved port she unearthed a bottle of their DFV Zin port, which is no longer being sold retail, and mailed it out to us. Additionally, the husband threw a bottle of their Sonoma vineyard's pinot noir into the box as a gift for our Thanksgiving table.

They're both very enthused about DFV wines in general, but this pinot is the one they've heaped the most praise on since I've known them.

I'm curious if anyone here has opinions on this winery in general, and these bottles in particular. I haven't had great luck with zin ports in the past, but to be fair I've only previously found them on offer from wineries that I never considered very good anyway.

One other thing. Despite the review quoted on the pinot's product page, my friends assure me this is drinking well now. Waddaya think?

Here's the links to what they sent me:

DFV Sonoma Pinot Noir, 2012: http://davisfamilyvineyards.com/2012_pinot_noir_sonoma_coast_campbell_ranch.php

DFV "Rapport" Zin Port, 2005: http://davisfamilyvineyards.com/2005_rapport.php

Thanks!

Tom

Their wines are OK. Can't say they ever excited me (limited experience) but not bad. :?

I'm not familiar with those wines. If they think the Pinot Noir is drinking well now, they would know more about it than I do and it might be fine to open this Thanksgiving. I do find that some of my Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs improve with six years in bottle.

I don't think I've had their wines. And I realize in looking at their website just now, that I have probably been mistaking them for someone else and therefore avoided them. Bad Jenise! I'll try to be more aware.

How nice that they sent wine to you!

Lol. Far from it. I've written about wine a few times there, but it really just exists to pass the time telling silly stories when I'm bored (generally very, very low brow stories, I hasten to add as way of forewarning). I started it to keep myself awake during the large gaps in my overnight work schedule when I was in danger of falling asleep. Then I kept it up to practice my story telling skills for a while when I was considering taking up offers to be a tv script writer. Now I just update it because of inertia.

Here's a wine story I did, in two parts. Just to give you an idea of the blog, anyway:
