WTN: Harrington Corvina Lodi '14...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Nov 10, 2015 12:16 pm

Tried this last night w/ my buffalo burger:
1. Harrington Corvina HeirloomRanch/Lodi (12.5%) 2014: Very light garnet color more like a Ramato than a RW; some Lodi/earthy/mushroomy/loamy rather fragrant/strawberry/cranberry slightly coarse nose; soft lightly tangy spicy/cinammon/cranberry/strawberry some Lodi/earthy/mushroomy bit coarse unusual flavor w/ light gentle tannins; med.short rather cranberry/strawberry/cherry pie earthy/dusty/Lodi/mushroomy slight tangy maybe a slight brett finish w/ light smooth tannins; reminds me a lot of Jura Poulsard w/o the earthiness; no Italian character or similarity to Valpolicella (that be a good thing) but quite an interesting rose-like red that's quite drinkable or gulpable. $25.00

1. Corvina is, of course, the key grape in Valpolicella. This is Bryan's first Corvina and the first time I've seen that grape in Calif. I was surprised at the light color and the wine drinks (well) like a rose. It would be interesting if he made an apassimento or ripasso Corvina. Then we'd know, for certain, that Bryan had gone off the deep end!!!

Interesting notes that reflect what I tasted last week, Tom. I might add that I got a strong "tea" character to the wine as well.

As a demonstration as to how far along the AFWE spectrum I might be, I was the absolutely only person in Vini Wine Bar who liked this wine! There were some serio0us "WTF" faces among other people, and the proprietor stated rather boldly that he would not be able to sell this!

This is a shop that HAS in the past carried other Harrington wines that are unique and polarizing in their own way, so....

(I liked it though. I mean, heck, there was no secondary fermentation under way in the bottle or other REAL weirdness, what's not to like!)

Yup, Brian...like many of Bryan's wines...you have to set aside preconceptions. When I opened it,
I was thinking Valpolicella. But after I started to think Jura Poulsard...I started to really like it.
