WTN: Four Valtelline Wines...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Nov 09, 2015 2:56 pm

Tried these three treasures I harvested at Ciapponi/Morbegno in our hotel room in Moia overlooking Sondrio:
1. GiovanniSegantini DOCG: ValtellinaSuperiore (13.5%; www.triaccavini.eu/en/la-gatta/the-estate) FratelliTriacca/Campascio/Svizzera 2011: Med.light color; lovely fragrant/floral/Nebb/violets/lilacs/spicy very light pungent/tarr/earthy slight alcoholic nose; quite tart/lean/austere some floral/lilacs/violets/Nebb/roses slight earthy/dusty rather delicate flavor w/ light bit bitey/astringent tannins; med.long light floral/lilacs/violets/Nebb slight dusty/earthy finish w/ light bitey tannins; quite a pretty Valtelline Nebb on the more delicate part of the spectrum. Euros 18.50 (Ciapponi)

2. NinoNegri Ca'Brione Chiavennasca IGT: Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio VinoBianco (12%; www.ninonegri.net/eng/; Sauvignon Blanc/Chardonnay/Incrocio Manzoni with Chiavennasca) Chiuro 2014: Very clear light yellow color; rather earthy/stony/mineral slight mango/pineapple/herbal rather interesting nose; very tart some austere/citric/grapefruity rather stony/mineral slight metallic/tangy flavor; med.long lean/austere/tight light mango/pineapple rather stony/mineral/grapefruity/metallic finish; an interesting mountain bianco but not much in the way of distinguishing features. Euros 18.00 (Ciapponi)

3. AlbertoMarsetti DOCG: Grumello ValtellinaSuperiore (13.5%; www.Marsetti.It/) 2011: Light ruby color; very perfumey/fragrant/floral/Nebb/violets/lilacs classic Nebb slight earthy/tarry rather comolex nose; lightly tart very floral/lilacs/violets/Nebb/perfumey classic Nebb slight tarry/pungent beautiful flavor w/ light bitey tannins; very long/lingering classic/floral/Nebb/lilacs/violets/rose petal very light tarry/earthy finish; a really beautiful perfumey/fragrant class floral Nebb w/ modest tannins; one of the better Valtelline Nebbs we tried.
Euros 28.00 (Ciapponi)

4. ArPePe Inferno FiammeAntiche DOCG: ValtellineSuperiore Riserva (13.5%; www.ArPePe.com/) 2011: Med.dark color; lovely fragrant/lilacs/violets/floral/classic Nebb quite spicy very light tarry/pungent almost Calif-like nose; fairly tart lovely/perfumed very floral/lilacs/violets/Nebb slight pungent/tarry/dusty bit ripe flavor w/ light slightly bitey/angular tannins; very long/lingering quite floral/perfumed classic Nebb/lilacs/violets very light tarry finish w/ light bitey tannins; needs several yrs and will go out 10-15 yrs; very aromatic & balanced and almost Calif in style. Euros 25.00

And the ole BloodyPulpit:
1. Triacca: I'm only familiar w/ their Valtelline wines. Didn't realize they had estates in Chianti/Brunello/Montepulciana. I've generally liked their Nebbs over the yrs.

2. Incrocio Manzoni: Not heard of this grape before. A cross (incrocio) created by a Prof.Manzoni at university in Conegliano of Riesling X PinotBlanc.

3. ArPePe: Not that I've had much experience, but these continue to be the most impressive Valtelline Nebbs I've had.
Too bad their prices in the USofA are so high.
