WTN: Two DryCreekVnyd Wines...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Nov 08, 2015 1:36 pm

Tried these two over the last few days:
1. DryCreekVnyd SauvBlanc DCV3 Estate/DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty (Planted in 1972; www.DryCreekVineyard.com; 14.1%) Healdsburg 2013: Light yellow color; strong pear/ripe/figgy/Semillon-like/waxy/pineapple lightly herbal/SB quite attractive nose; lightly tart pear/grapefruity/pineapple/ripe/figgy/spicy lightly herbal/SB rather complex flavor; very long/lingering pear/mango/pineapply/figgy/waxy bit grapefruity/herbal/SB light pencilly/oak lovely/interesting finish; a fairly rich/balanced/lush rather unusual Calif SB; reminds me a bit of Friuli SauvBlanc but w/o their earthiness. $nc (BS)/$25.00

2. DryCreekVnyd TheMariner Meritage DCV RW (14.5%; 56% CS/29% Merlot/7% CabFranc/4% Malbec/4% PetiteVerdot)
2007
: Very dark color; strong blackcurranty/Cab/boysenberry/ripe some pencilly/toasty/oak slight herbal quite perfumed youthful lovely nose; slightly tart strong rich/blackcurranty/blackberry/spicy light herbal/Cab light pencilly/toasty/oak lovely structured/balanced flavor w/ some ripe/smooth/round tannins; very long/lingering very strong blackcurranty/ripe/blackcherry/Cab slight herbal light pencilly/oak finish w/ some smooth/ripe/velvety tannins; plenty of blackcurrent Cab fruit w/o straying into the overripe territory; the balance & structure should carry this wine out 10-15 yrs; a lovely youthful Calif Cab. $nc(BS) /$40.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I am not a big fan of Calif SauvBlancs. I was quite taken by this DCV 13, however. This was from the original SB vnyd DaveStare planted in 1972 and is certifiably "old-vine" SauvBlanc. I doesn't have the slightly perfumey/muscatty character of the SauvMusque...but I loved it because it was pretty atypical of what I find in most Calif SB's.
I can kick myself for waiting so long to try the Mariner '07. It's a terrific example of young DryCreekVlly Cab and better than most I can think of from NapaVlly.
I am not a big fan of Calif CabSauv (and we won't even mention Merlot here!!). I find them rather homogeneous in character and just not that interesting. So these DryCreekVnyd Cabs just pile up in my collection (I have over 24 waiting to taste, going back to '86....awaiting for Kim or BillSmart to come to NM to try them w/ us). I think DCV is making first rate Cabs and they are being badly underestimated.

2. I think that TimBell and DryCreekVnyds are pretty much at the top of their game these days. Because of their production level and that you see them in TraderJoe's or CostCo, they just don't seem to get the recognition they truly deserve. 'Tis a pity, I think.

I just tasted the SB at the tasting room today, picking up my club stuff. Your note is in agreement with what I think, though I'm not nearly so specific - it's tighter and tarter than the typical California SB, yet shows the regional ripeness and some underlying minerality which I think also typifies Dry Creek Valley and which keeps it from falling into mediocrity.
Another thing I like about the DCVineyard SBs is that they don't die after a year or two.

I like their SB as well. I actually think the Dry Creek appellation seems to make some nice SB.

The 2007 cab blend sounds intriguing. I find the DCV Bordeaux blends somewhat earthy in character and like them more than I expected!

John: I need to visit the area. I have a club shipment from DCV and Preston to pick up!
