Notes adapted from my CellarTracker posts:
2008 Michael Shaps Chardonnay Wild Meadow Vineyard, Monticello, Virginia. Labeled as 13% abv.
Medium-gold color with faint greenish tint. It has a round, full texture with French oak influence. (100% French oak, 1/3 new.) IMO the oak enhances the wine rather than overwhelming it in the same way many white Burgundies are enhanced by a bit of oak. (The winemaker also vinifies Chardonnay in Burgundy.) This has nice fruit and a medium to long finish. Excellent for its style.
2013 Lucia Pinot Noir Lucy Rose' Santa Lucia Highlands, Monterey County, CA. 14.1% abv.
Pretty orangey/coral color with clarity. My second favorite rose' of last summer after the Muga Rosado. It gives a strawberry soda impression with a green element also (possibly celery leaves) and a tingly sensation on the palate. It is slurpable and showing a balance of fruit and acid. Produced and bottled by the Pisoni family with one dollar from the sale of each bottle going to breast cancer research.
2006 Domaine Daniel Rion & Fils Cote de Nuits-Villages "Le Vaucrain" Burgundy, France.
Labeled as 13% abv. Purchased from Burgundy Wine Company. In a nice drinking window. Fairly typical color and semi-opaque. It had been chilled and required some swirling to capture a perfumed aroma of cherries and raspberries. I like the texture and slight spiciness when held in the mouth for a moment. I had it with chicken but think it would also pair nicely with rabbit or duck in a fruit sauce (not orange sauce but cherries or berries.) It also was pretty nice with Dubliner cheese (similar to Cheddar.) This didn't strike me as a complex wine but was very satisfying as an easy sipper or food wine. I think it's a wine that very few could find objectionable.
