Last month, when Daniela was giving us a tour of the Balgera vnyds, we were visiting one just east and above Ponte. As we walked down the vnyd, she stopped at one vine that she wanted to point out. She identified it as Nebbiolo/Chiavennasca Bianco and that Luca (PaoloBalgera's son) was interested in propagating it to see what it could do.
In the Piemonte, NebbioloBianco is one of the synonyms for Arneis. They have a historical relationship, but the two varieties have no DNA-identified relationship...they are separate varieties.
I've had a handful of white Nebbiolos from the Valtelline, but they were made from Chiavennasca that was pressed off the skins early on. They were not particularly thrilling wines.
I can find no Nebbiolo/Chiavennasca Bianco identified out on the InterNet.
Anybody have any info on Nebbiolo/Chiavennasca Bianco???
BTW: OliverMcCrum, this Fall, has started bringing in the Paolo Balgera wines. His first/only Valtelline producer. The wines are very good and worth seeking out if Oliver's wines are in your market.
