Tried this odd wine a few weeks ago:
1. Berggasthaus Gummererhof IGT: Diolinoir Mitterberg (12.5%; L013; www.Gummererhof.com) FranzGummerer/Termeno 2014: Very dark/near black color; strong black cherry/plummy light chocolaty/licorice bit earthy/dusty/loamy quite interesting nose some like Mourv or Refosco; rather soft/fat plummy/licorice/black cherry/black cherry cola/boysenberry/Refosco-like ripe/lush flavor w/ light/bitey/sharp tannins; med.long soft/fat black cherry/black cherry cola/plummy/licorice some earthy/loamy finish w/ light bitey tannins; a classic AltoAdige/earthy red that resembles a Refosco but w/o the acidity; quite a lovely red. Euros 23.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Whilst we were in the AltoAdige, that Saturday there was a ChestnutFestival taking place in the central pavillion in the town of Tramin. There were some 8-10 wineries pouring their wine by the glass. Lots of (heavy-handed) food available to purchase. Very traditional and rustic and hearty w/o a single bit of steamed tofu in sight. Everyone talking German and looked to be nothing but locals...we were probably the only ones from NewMexico there!!! OmpPaPah band (including an Alpine horn) playing at full volume w/ lots of (drunken) singing going on. A real/genuine slice of AltoAdige life. People all very friendly and outgoing and having a jolly ole time. But I've decided that chestnuts are just not my thing.
I didn't recognize any of the wineries and tried several Traminers & Rislings. Decent enough, but just that. Saw this Diolinoir and knew I must try it.

2. Diolinoir: This is a variety developed in the Valais/Suisse in 1970 as a cross between PinotNoir and a Swiss indigenous variety. Designed to add color to Swiss reds. Made it across the border into the AltoAdige. It seemed a bit low in acidity but had very good aromas & flavors, much like Refosco but w/ more earthiness. Clearly a grape variety they should be planting all up & down the coast of Calif.
