A Hidden Local Gem!

by Brian K Miller » Sat Oct 17, 2015 8:56 pm

It was actually raining a little bit before noon today, so I bailed on my Napa road trip (for cycling) and hung out at the office until the small front cleared up.

And, I "discovered" a local gem on my local ride-GV Cellars, hidden away on a dead end road (Mason Lane) in Solano County's Green Valley Appellation!

Very earthy/savory/restrained wines that are right up my alley-and very affordable.

Highlights: 2014 Rose de Syrah. Onion skin color, deliciously fresh and savory-almost saline. One of my favorite roses, actually, this season. For $18, a killer wine!

The 2013 Carneros Pinot was also lovely-on the earthier side (not the sharp cherry).

The other major killer wine was their 2012 Suisun Valley Cabernet. All about the earth, and the cassis fruit. Great acid balance.

A very hidden, very nice winery that's been around for a while!

I didn't even know there was such a thing as a Green Valley appellation, let alone have I heard of this winery. How cool though, and kind of life-affirming, to come across a winery that good that you've never heard about before. Those of us who pay so much attention to such things can easily fall into the mindset that if it's worth knowing about, we probably already know about it. It feels pretty good to find out otherwise.

Not to confuse, but I think there are two “Green Valley AVAs” in California. One is in Sonoma County’s Russian River AVA (“Green Valley of Russian River AVA” most of these wines at one time were just labeled from the ‘broader” Russian River AVA) and (the one Brian mentioned) is in Solano County just southeast of Napa County near San Pablo Bay (hence ‘Green Valley of Solano AVA”).

Well I have heard of them before but have only recently discovered/been reminded how good they are. Especially for the money...I honestly would rather drink their 2012 Green Valley Cabernet than the 2011 Duckhorn I had with friends last night. Nothing wrong with the Duckhorn-it was actually pretty good, but considering the price difference!!!!!!
